Hey guys. Am kinda new here but I'd really like to know if the busa is a good first bike for a starter like myself. You see, am smitten by the busa but I've never owned a bike before and am thinking of purchasing one for myself. So what adevice would you busa lovers give to a guy like myself?

If you check out the other forums here you'll see an entire thread on the Busa as a starter bike. Most will tell you no it isn't from a pure power and size standpoint. Take a read of it and see what you think. Welcome to the board!

Welcome to the board. Not a good first bike. Start on a 600 ride for a while and get some experience. Also look at insurance rates. Lots of shocks for some folks there. Like they said use the search engine for this subject. LOTS of info there. Good Luck.

two thumbs up for being smart enough to realize the choice in front of you! start smaller...WAY smaller look at it this way you will have something to still dream about and look forward too. Besides if you wait a year or two you can get a good deal on an 08'

Use search. This topic has already been beat to death. There are plenty of threads about it. I got one for my first bike, and LOVE it, but there are those out there that will say I'm stupid, I should have never done it, I'm an idiot for it, etc, etc, etc. . . There are others that will support the decision. But as others, and I have stated, just use the search function.

No matter what anyone says, the decision to get a BUSA is going to be made by yourself regardless of what anyone can tell you, Just be smart , Think real hard about it and don't rush your decision. It could be the last time you have to make a choice! The BUSA can be a real cooperative motorcycle or it could be a Widow Maker!

+2 I agree 100%. It CAN be a good first bike, or it could be a VERY bad one. It will ultimately be your choice. If you think you're mature enough and have enough self control to not be stupid on it. It has plenty of power to kill you before you can realize it. As long as you can harness the power and ride within your limits you'll be fine.

Stripes,
It's a lot of bike and things seem to happen a lot faster on a motorcycle than in a car. Having said that you might think about an SV650 or a Ninja 250. Let me tell you a little about my experience as think it might be close to yours.

I too was all over the 'busa. My bro in law got a red 04 limited and I thought it was truly the cat's ass. I decided I was gonna learn to ride and get me one. I was 35 at the time.

I took my MSF class, got my endorsement and bought a brand new 04 SV650. I put 6500 miles on that bike w/o a problem. I thought to myself, "This riding thing is no big deal. I'm gonna get what I really want."

I promptly went out and bought and 06 limited. I rode it 2500 miles and thought I was doing pretty well.

On a Thursday I lowsided it and it skidded right into a jeep cherokee. Totaled the bike and totaled the jeep. The only reason I walked with just some scrapes, bruises and cuts was for two reasons.

1) There were no cars along side me.

2) The bike did not fall on top of me.

You wanna know how fast I was going? 70MPH in a 45MPH. It's in the police report. I wasn't trying to be a squid. I just had no idea.

Here is the rub. I hadn't developed a sense of fast that bike accelerates or what certain speeds feel like.

Now, I went right back out and bought a brand new Hayabusa with the insurance settlement that I received. I've got nearly 20,000 miles on it and have ridden the thing everywhere.

But I was really REALLY lucky. Perhaps this anecdote will help you make a decision.

If you get a bike that's too big and powerful, it impairs your ability to learn to ride. You end up learning things wrong, essentially and eventually, you have to unlearn your mistakes.

Get a smaller bike at first, something used and beat up and just learn to ride. You'll learn a lot faster and you can get past your mistakes. A 250 may be too small but a GS500 should more than get you started.

Ride that for a year and then move up to a bigger bike, ride that for a while, then a 1000 may be in order for a while, then the Busa.

I know it sounds like it takes a long time to get there but in reality, that's how the best learning can happen. Your call, though. If you decide to go with a Busa, be very careful on it.

Lots of good advice here.

Whatever you decide to buy/ride, you're welcome to become one of the site's regulars. This is a family...albeit, regularly strange and often dysfunctional.

The fact that you're asking in advance shows maturity on your part, but we'd rather see you and help you 'progress' on a variety of bikes which will by plateaus, give you the best base for owning and thoroughly enjoying the only real king of uber-bikes.

Good luck in your tough decision.

thanks guys. Iam really gald that you guys got to respond so soon.I was thinkin, what if I got the busa and started out slow, you know, take my time. I must admit that the busa is an attractively fast bike but at this point(as a first timer) its not the monster performance that am after. That means I wont start off at high speeds. What'u guys think, any suggestions?
