Well, today was my first day back to work in 7 months. I must say that I've become accustomed to sitting around not doing much of anything, so this was a long day, and will be getting longer.

I got a job as a Boiler Plant Operator on Great Lakes Naval Base in North Chicago, IL.

5:30am-Wake up and shower

7:30am-At HR on Great Lakes Naval Base ready for check-in.
What do you mean I'm not on your list?

You mean there's more paperwork, than you already sent me?
There's no coffee...#$%$ #$%%^& !

10:30am-I'm done with paperwork, fingerprinting, etc...

11:00am-I'm now in a waiting area to get an ID made. BIG WAIT!

1:45pm-Finally found a break room with coffee. What the hell is the Navy coming to when you can't find coffee.

2:15pm-I finally have a Gov't ID that has my L/R index fingerprints electronically encoded in it. No criminal activity for me.
2:30pm-I'm at the Public Affairs Office so they can include all the new hires into their monthly newsletter. Another picture.

3:00pm-I finally get to the boiler room and meet the supervisor. Pretty nice guy, but kinda rough like you would normally expect at a boiler room. I get introduced to a lot of people I probably won't remember for while. They have coffee on 24/7...yeah! The supervisor tells me that they're really short on people for the midnight shift (they do rotate), and that I'll be on there for a while. Not only will I start on midnights, but my first one starts TONIGHT!

3:30pm-I'm headed home to get ready to go back in again at midnight.

It's a really good feeling to be working again, but today has been a pain. I forgot how much paperwork was involved with the government. It's been 7 years since I was on Active duty, so it was a rude reminder of the red tape that goes along with the job.

I probably won't be around as much as I was before, but I'll check in as I can to see what's going on. My post/day average will most definitely drop. I don't have all day to sit on the web anymore.

Take care everyone, just thought I'd share this,
Jim

Captain, there are jobs out there for "fair" wages, but I was being picky about it, and once I applied for the Naval Base job back in July, I sort of quit looking for anything else. Just looked enough to see what was still available.

I was starting to get a little nervous waiting on the call back/start date when the unemployment went into the extension period.

I'm just glad to be working again.

Glad to hear you got the call, Jim. I could use 'bout seven months of free time but I'd hate to be looking for a job that long.

Dont get me wrong either, I am happy for you too, now its my turn.

Congratulations on the new job. Believe me I feel your pain in regards to military red tape. I live it, well sorta, it's everytime I get a contract it's a whole new batch of briefs, badges, etc, etc, etc.... On and freaking on... Ah well, pays the bills.

STKROO ...You just make sure your TPS reports are done on time!!!

Captain...What is your specialty/occupation? You can PM me if you want. I know the base is hiring in various areas.

Here's a link to Dept. of the Navy HR web site. They're slow at hiring, but they are federal jobs. The also list nation wide, not just for the Great Lakes area. You could always take a meaningless job to get by until something opened up.

Good Luck Captain!
