Figured out my tire problem- Help Please

Ok, so I think Ive nailed down why I keep running through rear tires with wear down the middle so quickly. I am lowered 2 inches and extended 4 inches. Apparently when I hit a bump the tire is grinding out the undertail. How do I stiffen the rear shock? Lossen top then clockwise turn the bottom ring? How much should I turn?

Oh - whats the easiest tool and way to do this? Seems pretty tight in there.
 
yah im skinny enough as it is.. probably one of the smaller guys on the forum lol.. cant get my spanner wrench in there- using a long bar and a hammer to pound it around clock wise.. almost at one full turn.. feels a bit stiffer but not what i need.
 
I used a long drift punch for mine.. Try two full turns.
 
Good luck, Odds are your going to need a stiffer shock, But only 4" over you might get away with just adjusting your pre load.
 
thanks folks. got it just short of two turns before i got worn out. I'll see how that does and report back later. Might have to raise the back end a hair too.
 
bro, not trying to pick, but how could you let it eat inner fender long enough to do that kinda damage and not notice? the first time I heard mine rub I was like"somethings gotta be done now!" I would definately raise it up. If you've got some of the 3 hole links and its on the last hole, goto the middle one. If its already on the middle one, then you need to go back to stock height or spend some money on a new, beefier rear spring.
 
Do you ever ride two up? I would think even with stiffing the suspension you will bottom out when riding two up.
 
Talk to a sponsor and get the right spring if your rubbing I believe they are less than 100 from trac.

Adjust the rear shock.I marked my nut so i could keep track of how many full turns the of the nut I did. I think I did 4-6 full rotations of the nut. I ride 2 up at times and I am sreched 61/2 " and lowered 1-2" in rear. Now I do not bottom out even 2 up and doesnt ride bad when alone either. You just need to get used to and adapt to the new rear stifer setup.

nope, never ride two up.. wife has her own bike. Ive only been home a little over a month and the work got done on it just before i got home so.... well i got it befed up now.. i have adjustable lowering links so I am gonna lift it a little too.... wow.

You cannot make your suspension STIFFER by adding preload. You cannot change the spring rate without changing the spring! What takes place when you add preload is: As you crank in more preload, you are pushing down on the spring and the result is simply raising the rear of the bike. Adding preload does nothing to the spring and actually does not move the spring at all. Unless of course, you add enough preload to top the shock out.

This is true for your forks as well. Adding preload does not make it stiffer.

I have never understood why some choose to lower their bike with lowering links then add preload to raise it back up? :dunno:

Although you can change the geometry and the range of the suspension's travel through proper use of preload, the simple discription of preload is "Ride Height Adjustment"!

Okay, I'll keep my mouth shut from now on and let you guys that don't have a clue about how suspension functions nor how adjustment changes affect the bikes behavior rattle on educating each other! :moon:
