The tiny fairing bolt that holds the mushroom on instantly snaps off. It's also 500 lbs of bike dropping on a hollow section of frame with a small round object between it and the ground. Without the mushroom you just replace the panel, with the mushroom the bike it totaled due to a puckered frame.

This IS NOT one of my bikes, it's just a picture I found on the net showing the damage caused by one of those mushrooms.
