Any of these work for computer dumbies?

Like why won't my laptop work unplugged from the linksys thiny while I am sitting in front of the tv in my recliner but it will work while I have it plugged directly in to the linksys thingy?

You can tell by my question that I am very knowledgeable on the subject of computers.
