I sure wish someone could explain why we can't use the english (or american) language in this country.
The local weather idiots are blathering on about tropical storm "onree". Which is spelt Henri. The whole point of nameing the storm is to give an easy indication of the storms sequence in the season. A name starting with *H* indicates the 8th storm. The women got uppity and offended at the fact that all the names were feminine. So now they mix gender names. Have the French protested too??? And if they have who cares?. "onree" sounds like it is the 15th storm ie *O*. I say lets start using english again!

Sorry had to vent. I'm now going to get on my Busa and ride through "onree".

ha ha, true enough but "onree" originated in spanish speaking territory, but then again the name is pronounced "onree" as in French - hmmm - that is a weird one.

Oh btw - do you think "Hayabusa" is an english word :tounge:

Go buy the StormTroopers Of Death album (CD fer you yungin's) titled Speak English Or Die. Sounds like you might like the title track.

I 'm going to suggest that to the weather folks.

"Hurricane Hayabusa is coming in fast. This may be the fastest most distructive catagory 5 hurricane of the century"

American is NOT a language...YET.

Same reason a huge percentage of people in this country speak French . They're all bastids and should be shot .
Kiddin'....sorta .

The same reason you have TV stations broadcasting in Spanish . Some countries are a melting pot of cultures.

We have English speaking TV channels . Also some in Chinese , and some in East Indian .

WE CANT KILL THEM ALL....the politicians would never go for it . Then again...we could shoot the politicians first.

I hate to be critical but in order for your request that a language be used in a proper manner, you must be able to use it properly yourself...Hmmm...

And why would that be??? Unlike several others on this board I am not capable off rebuilding my Busa from scratch.
That wouldn't stop me from requesting that some one else do so and properly to boot. Besides, I'd be happy if they'd just use it period let alone properly. :D

Well...Here's a thought... None of us on this board are really speaking the Native Language...Well there may be a few Native Americans on the board, I dunno. But point is if you are not Native American, your an Immigrant as well.

Now while I understand the whole language thing I tend to roll with it. I feel that if you are going to be a permanant resident of the US you should at least make a decent effort to learn the language, not complain because the street signs are in english. America is supposed to be a melting pot of all sorts of cultures, so mandating an Official Language may not be the best plan, but learning to speak basic english should be a requirement for citizenship...in my view. Don't have to be fluent, but have to be able to speak.
If I was going to be working in Germany for 6 months or so you can bet your butt I am going to do my best to learn the language. Why? Basic curteousy...
Just a thought...

The rain in Spain, falls MAINLY in the plain.

Everybody has a valid point here.

My 2c: Hurricanes are named by an international committee, and they don't just hit the U.S. so the name thing doesn't bother me.
But when I call a company, I shouldn't have to press 1 to continue in English! That's the worst! You should have to press a number to continue in any other language.

The idea of the melting pot is good but there's not a lot of melting anymore. You can live your whole life in L.A. and speak only Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc. You can buy a house, pay your bills, buy a car, watch TV do all your shopping and never have to speak English. And now our illustrious Gov. Davis is going to let illegal immigrants get driver's licenses. You wonder why the recall?...
sorry got off on a rant.

...and you guys haven't even touched the whole "braille" on the drive-up ATM machines yet?! :D

Joking aside...it seems that Americans can travel just about anywhere and find someone that speaks our language...it makes it easier for us to get around in a foreign land, doesn't it?

Those in the U.S. don't generally offer the same to the multitude of foreigners that travel and spend their money here as tourists...having to press "1" to get instructions in English isn't so bad...what's one more button, really?  There'll be 15 more to push before you get lost in the menu, hang up and just wait for an operator to help you anyway!

It seems that Americans want others to cater to us, yet we don't want to cater to anyone else?  Can't have it both ways...right?

Hello...we're riding Hayabusas!  That's as far from English as you can get!

:bounce:

Good write up VaBusa and very true, for some reason we tend to be very arrogant here as far as expecting other cultures/countries to cater to us. Did anyone here watch the "Great Race" on TV ? There was one point where one of the contestants was in a taxi in Seoul Korea and he was frustrated and angry that the cabbie didn't speak english "hello, you are in Korea - what the hell do you expect !!! " I myself have travelled around the world and I have been impressed that most people attempt to speak english to us, but it is not a requirement !!!!

This is a gereat point Big O. "My 2c: Hurricanes are named by an international committee, and they don't just hit the U.S. so the name thing doesn't bother me". Additionally, most of our names have origins outside of the US, so why not use a French name?

As a general rule, we are too arrogant here in the US. Start traveling and you find many places where the people speak 3, 4 or 5 different languages. English IS the language of business and money, but we need to expand our horizons.

What do you think Rider of Fast Bike?

It's just the idea, that I have to push 1 to continue in the language that is the accepted language for the U.S.A.  It's the principal of the idea.  It should say.. if you want to continue in (whatever language other than English) press...
As for the multitudes of foreign travellers who come here, there are plenty of people here already that speak their language, from ANY country.

If you go to a different country you should NOT expect to have people speak English.

I don't mind if we have everything in different languages, but people will not learn to speak the English if they don't have to.
If you move to a different country, learn the language!

And the braille on the drive-up ATMs see?! this is just the beginning, soon we'll have blind drivers, wanting all the signs in braille too!

I know it's frustrating, but if you didn't press "1", you'd have to sit through a menu listing every language available...or press the * or # key to continue...either way, you'd have to push a button, right?

I wonder what the % breakdown of English to Spanish speaking citizens are in the U.S.? Or English to French? English speaking individuals might not be the majority as assumed...

Ahhhh...why worry over such things? Have a drink...relax...
