Engine Failure

What could be some causes of engine failure? I'm looking at 2004 'busa perfect condition except the engine. No leaks, no overheating. Current owner has not taken it to the shop for analysis, so he claims he doesn't know what happened. Anybody with any thoughts or ideas what could have happened? Any help greatly appreciated. I've repaired my current 03 'busa, but that was more cosmetic than mechanical. Would like to hear possible worst case scenario. Thanks!

It could be a lot of things.
It may be worthless, and need a new one.
Getting a used engine could be cheaper than fixing one that has been badly damaged.
Be careful.

Thanks for the info. Something doesn't feel right about this bike. I may not know much, but I do know engines generally just don't "fail".

does it turn over or run at all? maybe it has 3 gal of water in it like a certain gsxr did 2 weeks ago...

Battery is dead. Bike is also out of state, so I have to go by what they tell me.
