CT Heartview/Calcium Scoring $69

I just got my heart looked at today in a CT machine, for $69. One of my co-workers was telling me about it, and I thought for that price it would bring a lot of peace of mind. Took less than 5 minutes; cost me $69 no insurance necessary no doctor's order necessary. It looks at your heart in a 3D view and looks for plaque buildup/blockages. You get the report and a copy goes to your primary care physician. If there is something they see they don't like, then you are referred to a cardiologist. Seems to me like a good idea so I had one and my wife is going to also. I made a phone call yesterday at 3 PM and had the scan at 9AM this morning, right down the street at the hosptial of my choice. In and out in 30 minutes. Who says we don't have the best healthcare in the world?

You might remember my thread last month about my 78 year old dad having to go to the ER and them seeing something on his EKG they didn't like. Well, last week he had a stress test, and they found a blockage. Last Wednesday he had an angioplasty to fix two blocked arteries in his heart. One was a 99% (no typo, 99%) and the other was in the 80's. He now has two stints and is recovering nicely at home. I spent the night with him in the hospital on WED night (which may be why I made a flurry of posts that evening because I was sitting in his hospital room with my laptop).

The nurse told me "that's the one they call the widowmaker"; we are lucky it got caught before he had a heart attack and killed him. So I thought it would give me peace of mind to get scanned too.

I thought it was well worth it. If you have history in your family, or smoke/overweight, etc., might not be such a bad idea to look into this, may be the best $69 you ever spend!

is this a program locally or national thing? got some details?

My company just suggested (read forced) everyone to do a wellness study. Very comprehensive but did not do this type of thing, rather looked at blood work and every possible value for it. Sounds like a worthy $69 for sure :beerchug:

I don't think it was some kind of special deal or anything like that. I would recommend you call your Doctor and ask them if they've ever heard of it, or even call a local cardiologist or hospital heart center and ask them about it. No harm in asking!

The wellness study your company 'suggested' can be a good thing or a bad thing. If only YOU get the info which you use to improve your health and therefore lower your company's risk/rating and probably insurance premium, i'd be all for that. If the COMPANY get's access to the data, they could use it in hiring/promotion decisions (cruel and probably illegal).

They company uses it to allow us to save on premiums. If you participated you get a discounted rate....if not, you probably would be better on obamacare. They also say it will help encourage folks to increase their wellness scores year over year, though it would not impact employment (trust me there's some folks in my company that define unhealthy).

The insurance company does NOT have access to the data at all, this was done to prevent them from changing any premiums. It was done at great expense to the company and the screenings were completely free for us

I did participate, it did enlighten me to a few things I need to work on. They are also providing wellness coaching to help folks fix what needs fixin. In the grand scheme, I just need to shed 50lbs and get my good cholesterol up slightly (5pts)

We just switched ADD and life insurance at my work. I opted to go above their "allowed" coverage without a possible health test...but I heard nothing and noticed the rates are the new ones.

I need to get back on track on regular visits. I will be 41 this year and dont even have a regular doctor. The one I went to before was about 8 years ago...Dr Fatfinger....but he left and I never started back up with anyone.

My wife says I should go to her general practicioner....a woman. I have concerned myself, by stumping myself, in wondering which would be worse...a woman or a man.

I'm sure they are thinking the same thing....:poke:

here in edmond ok it is one hundred bucks 2 have this study done. if u have diabetes a family history of heart disease, smoker, overweight, or r a woman over 40 you should go ahead and have the test. no reason not to.

prevention is ALWAYS cheaper than cure especially in regards 2 your health. excersize drink plenty of water dont smoke in excess or drink in excess and make a conscience effort 2 eat well
