Timmy, that's what I've always heard.  I admit that using a motorcycle has it's dangers, but I surely think there is this 1 or 2% of riders that has never gone down maybe even due to dumb blind luck fate skillz whatever.  I'd like to alter that famous line to 3 types:  those who have gone down, those that will go down, and those that beat the odds with skill or luck.

here's sumpin:

speaking of stats, i spoke to my insurance agent and he said even driving auto's, americans average 3 crashes in a lifetime of driving including car/deer accidents.

as far at sportbikes, ive been riding 4 yrs. no pavement yet, waiting my turn....

Well, I hope that is true and the 5000 and so registered members
here stay in that 1 or 2 percent.
It just seems to me that if you spend a lifetime riding you are going to have a mishap of some sorts.
I just love riding around with no helmet, tank top, shorts and sneakers, but I don't.
The reason being you just never know what is out there to greet you at anytime.
I don't need confidence to ride hard and wearing my gear doesn't give me more of it, but if the worst happens I know I have a much greater chance of living to ride another day if I have my body armour on.
And for some reason all my none riding freinds love to punch it to hurt there hands.

I have never been down in my 30 years riding on the street. I do drag race and I must admit that there have been a few times I have been dam close to hitting the ground. Like the night three deer tried to do me in... I guess I have had a horse shoe up my ass... Just lucky I guess. I hope I never find out what a crash is like. I have lost a few friends over the years to cycle crashes. For some of the guys in here that have crashed I do thank them for telling us about it so we can learn from them and keep us thinking. I do wish that they never went down. Each time I read about a crash I think how it would suck to mess up such a great bike. Hell I keep mine so clean. I will not ride it if its dirty... broken plastic and scratched paint would make me sick!!!

Been down twice, once when I got sideswiped by some 16 year old girl who never saw me because she never looked. Her fault and partially mine for coming up on her, now know to look out for this situation. High sided the busa on Labor Day, rear spun on some sand, kicked out, then caught again and threw me off the other side.

I think the chances of making a small mistake or coming around a turn and hitting sand/gravel/cow in the middle of the road are inevitable.

I crashed my 6R on 1/16/02...pretty bad.  Broke my back (3 places), my collarbone and both bones in my right wrist.  Until that day I rode around in my own bubble thinking I was never going to go down and if I did my bike better be totalled because I wasn't going to ride it all scratched up. lol   Never thinking one day I'd almost kill myself.

Needless to say, things are a little different now.  Every time I turn the key I say a little prayer.  The crash has made me much smarter and wiser, I don't take anything for granted any more because it can all be gone in the blink of an eye.

I cringe when someone says they're not going to go down.  I just stand there thinking...yes you are...there are those that have and those that will.

Be Safe
Kris

Does that mean that I am done then?  Two cars and one bike accident.   Atleast both car accident were someone elses fault.

Kris
Amen.

This and many other responses are what I am talking about. I too thought that I was the "1 percent" that had beat the odds until I went down. I consider myself VERY safe and expereinced but you simply must assume that you are going down sooner or later.

The problem is that you just don't belive it until it happens, even after 10 or even 30 years. But, assuming a safe return to riding, going down will make you a much better rider for many reasons.

Please, you "no wreckers" prove us all wrong. But be forewarned. No we won't say "told you so".

I DEFINITELY plan and assume I COULD wreck every single time I go riding. Always wear gear, always and aware of everyone and everything around me. I'm not in denial but I do plan/hope to be in that non wrecking percentage.

So far, in this poll the percentage is very high!

Never been down on a street bike.  Been down more times than I care to remember on dirt bikes though.

Oh, wait a minute. Does falling over on a bike while sitting still count? If so, I'm guilty of one.

Hmmm I focus on keeping it up and not going down, but I wear the gear, and make the wifey wear it as well when she's riding with me

Hey Max, dang! There has to be a better way to paint your house...

44 pseudo-crashes to 21 NEVER crashes. WOOHOO!!! There's hope for never ever ever ever crashing.

So much for that statement "2 type of cyclists: those that have been down and those that are going down"

Good post, been riding on the street since I was 14 (dont look dad, 12) 21 years, Oh man Im getting old.. and I have never been down. Great poll Odyssey.

For those of you who were at Laguna in '03...well...er...uh...you know the story.  Had on the proper gear and only tore my ACL, PCL, and LCL.  Not a painful experience, but recovery time is lengthy.  Also had a strained chest muscle.  That was probably the most pain I experienced throughout my encounter.  Approx. $2000 damage to my baby too.

P.S.  I still blame my whole ordeal on Lori a.k.a. LoBusa.
