- uninstall ALL Symantec Norton stuff
- run disk cleanup and pretty much checkmark everything but COMPRESS OLD FILES
- find, download, install and run CCLEANER, the file side AND the registy side
- uninstall ALL programs you don't use. first try their menu, then try ADD AND REMOVE, or if no uninstall, delete the directories and icons
- delete everything WINDOWS/PREFETCH directory
- move EVERYTHING out of STARTUP folder
- run MSCONFIG and uncheck mark everything in the STARTUP tab, then goto services and CHECK MARK "don't show Microsoft services" or whatever at the bottom, and uncheckmark everything left
- install SP3 [xp?]
- install free AVG antivirus [or avast]
- run defrag
reboot. and reboot AT LEAST once a week
Best way: reinstall the Operating System. Thats the absolute best way. It will feel like a brand new FAST computer. I rebuild mine about once every year
