Hey Busa buddies, I think I will get a laptop or notebook ( is there a difference? ) To take to Calif with me and leave my main desk top here. Any recommendations on brand or type?
I like Dell, I do alot of internet, some digital photo & vid, some word processing, quickbooks or quicken ... mostly thats it. Any suggestions will be appreciated. - Thanx / Kent

laptop's bigger - Dell is the machine to get.

laptop, get a Dell. sure it's fast-food-production type equipment, but works well and good support. I have been a sys admin for 4 years and have used only Dell and a few workstations that I built. Dell has the upper hand.

Kent

my vote is a gateway, I use only dell at work and personally own a Gateway laptop 2.2 ghz 528 ddr ram cdrw and dvd rom combo. I do photo's and spreadsheets for work and obviously cruise the web. never had a problem and they will beat anyone's price barnone.

gateway.com

check it out. BTW the gateway factory is 2 miles from my house, so maybe I'm bias.... get the one you like the best.

Hey Kent, man it all depends on what you are looking for. Personally I havve a Sony GRX650, its a 16" screen and the speed and memory are comparable to the rest. I am Dell and HP certified on laptop repair and they are all pretty good machines. I chose the Sony because I use this machine at work, then take it home and use it on the wireless network there. Dell does not make a 16" screen and I dont think that HP does either, not sure about the gateway. I also chose the Sony because the digital camera and external DVD burner are Sony and I can use Sony's proprietary connections for plug and play. My two cents, they are all pretty decent, figure out what you want it for and dont by anything just because someone told you that the new 6.8 mhz machine was out, it will be outdated in a few weeks anyway, get a machine a little bigger than you need right now, you will grow into it.....

Captain

Dell all the way. Ive owned one for the past 4 years and I have no complaints whatsoever about this machine or its service.

Hey Kent. I've been working on these stupid machines for 15 years now.

If ya want my .02, get whatever is on sell!! They are a commodity anymore and no such thing as a "bad" one. I have seen that the biggest bang for the buck out there are the toshibas. I've owned two of them with no complaints. I think I'm probably a bit harder on my stuff than most since I travel almost every day. The machine gets slammed around all the time and never a problem.

I bought a Toshiba Satellite and I am very happy with it. I just wish it was a little lighter but no biggie.

Thank you Gentlemen, I have a Dell at home ( Demension 4300 P4/ 40G hd... ) I really like it, no probs at all.
As for the Notebook do some of you use them at home also? Do you dock it to another keyboard & mouse at home?? Thats what I was thinking of doing. I dont like those little rollerball mouse thingy's, unless they have changed recently. Or maybe just takes some getting use to...
Also whats the best screen? Active matrix or TFT?? My eyes are going I think. And is a CD/Burner/DVD all in one a good idea or too many in one slot? Thanx again - KMC

Forgot to add : any diff between the Intel vs Celeron??? ??

I don't have a docking station and I use mine mostly at home. The mouse is a square touch pad and is ok but I think I'm going to get a mouse which will plug in without being docked.

The DVD/CDRW combo causes no problems for me. I use the DVD for traveling with my 3 yr old daughter, keeps her occupied. The CD recorder works good to, and fast as heck.

This is the one I have.

Dell etc all make a good laptop but there are only a few actual manufacturers that build these types of things dell buys them from a company that makes them same as alot of other second level or retail sales outlets . Buy what you can get on sale but make sure you get the longest warranty possible I can tell you from repairing them that anypart inside usually means 4-5 hundred dollar mainboards etc . If you buy the newest out you spend alot of money on braging rights . I am a retail seller I could find out what my cost would be and warranty info etc and you can go from there to see what you should be in the ballpark of .

I can configure them any way you want may cost alittle for shipping But I can have them drop shipped to your door The last is a kick ass machine with a geforce video card supports up to 3.0 GHz P4 etc Even if you dont buy one this will give you an idea where you want to be . These even look like a dell I cant say for sure but I do believe they are manufactured in the same place . Mine are called Maxnote Notebooks Let me know if you have any other questions . But if you are looking for more bang for your buck I would go to staples or Sams club etc look for something that is a leftover and get the longest warranty you can .. Just my 2 cents though

That is a damn good quote if you ask me. I would go with the 64MB G-force 4 and the 40 gig hard drive though.

Dell is a good deal and you may have a dell service center in hawaii maybe a better deal for you than getting one from a guy you never met way over in Maine LOL its not a bad deal at all If I where going to buy one Online Dell would be my first choice with Gateway second

Thanx everybody! And Mr. B I allways thought that little gitar smilely kinda looked like you.

Ok 1 more question, would there be a disadvantage to the Celeron?

Hows Toshiba? ( as you said most are 2nd labeled anyway )

Hard to beat this price : Toshiba Notebook
