What is the procedure for measuring chain stretch??

I tried to post a pic off the service manual but couldnt. This will do.
Count out 21 pins on the chain and measure the distance between the two points. If the distance exceeds the service limit (319.4mm or 12.57 inches) the chain must be replaced.

I am assuming that any 21 pins is good to measure. And that the measurement should be pin to pin on center?
