They are starting out with a Bike run and ending with a beef and beer to benefit Dominic Mazzio he is a 3 year old little boy from the Mercer County area. Up until a few months ago he was your average active toddler running around playing with his friends and family. One night he woke up in the middle of the night and was unable to walk and by the time his parents got him to the ER he couldn’t move his entire body. It was after extensive testing that he was diagnosed with a rare disease called ADEM/Transverse Myalitis. It only affects 5 people in a million. Acute transverse myelitis is a rare, focal immune-mediated disease that affects the sensory and motor pathways of the spinal cord. It is characterized by a sudden clinical onset of neurological motor dysfunction associated with sensory loss and autonomic disturbances. He spent 9 days in ICU and now he is in Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Brunswick learning how to crawl, walk and do everything all over again. He has a long road ahead of him with intense physical therapy but he is a fighter and with the love and support of his family and friends a full recovery is not out of reach.
The benefit is being planned in his honor to help his parents offset some of the high costs of his medical bills for his treatment such as physical therapy, and medications. Also at the parents request a portion will be donated to help in the research of this rare disease and to maybe someday find a cure for ADEM/Transverse Mya
