anybody in Virginia use a radar detector?

For some strange reason, it seems Virginia has outlawed radar detectors, I think DC too (but that's another country run by liberals anyway LOL!).

I don't use a radar detector, haven't used one in over 20 years, but would bet some of you are using them here in Virginia. If so, speak up. What's your experience?

The first time we were stationed Norfolk, VA was in June of 1995 and upon crossing the NC/VA state line going up I-95 there was a sign stating that radar detectors were illegal.

the state police in va use the detector detectors so if you were to use one, it needs to have the circuits to shutdown when it senses those things or you get nailed for speeding and the device (which they take in site)

that being said I've had mine on in VA and never had a problem but then again I dont speed that much these days

I had one conficated in college. I don't think it's constitiutional - just one of the odd over bearing things in an otherwise fairly conservative state.

Little use in the area I live since they're beeping, buzzing and flashing all the time.

My Escort Passport saved my wallet while traveling from MD to Wintergreen VA several years ago. The string of traffic I was in was rolling at 65 in a 55 when we hit a radar trap cresting a hill, the detector alerted, I slowed down and the truck right in front of me got tagged. It's a good idea to get the detector out of sight however before the LEO's see it...

I have a brand new one sitting on my desk from 3 years ago and have never even plugged it in...they are extremely strict in VA on the use of detectors~!~

The cops are smart, if possible they will light you up from behind and your detector goes off you hit the brakes immediately and they see the brake lights they know you have a detector. Thats how I got nabbed and how my father got nabbed.

Turn it off and put it up; if they find it in the car they will confiscate it.

I got pulled over once there; my detector was cold so he let me put it in the trunk until I left the state. Ticket was still expensive!

Communications Act of 1934[17] and illegal in commercial vehicles by DOT regulation (49 CFR 392.71). Exceptions:

Illegal in all vehicles: Virginia, Washington D.C., U.S. military bases
Illegal in commercial vehicles under state law: Illinois, New York, New Jersey (specifically, commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds (4,500 kg) and all vehicles over 18,000 pounds (8,200 kg)) Also illegal in all commercial vehicles over 10000lbs under US federal law
Indirectly illegal (Illegal due to prohibitions against affixing items to windshield - "obstructing vision"): Minnesota, California[1], New York[18]
Repealed: Connecticut (repealed in 1992)[19]

NOTE: They shouldn't confiscate

Confiscation and/or destruction of the detector was once a common practice but lawsuits raised by drivers arguing violation of property rights have resulted in temporary removal while a citation is written, then return of the device after its description (make, model and serial number) has been entered on the ticket - usually for speeding and possession/operation of detector. Use of a radar/lidar detector on a military installation is prohibited. Persons entering a military installation with one visibly mounted to the sun visor or windshield will be asked to remove it and put it away. Those who refuse will be denied entry onto the installation at that time. Military law enforcement may not soley stop a vehicle for a detector being in use but, along with being stopped for another moving violation, the person using the detector may be ordered to report the violation to his/her unit commanding officer (active duty ONLY). No traffic citation may be issued against military dependents, civilian workers or retired persons even if the military installation is in a state or district which prohibits the use, possession and/or transportation of such devices. Military law enforcement cannot enforce civilian ordnances, state laws, etc.

Here in cali i forgot to put it away going to work on base once...they stopped me and tried to give me a ticket, I showed the PMO the regulation and this...he didnt give me the ticket and let me know..." well since I cant cite you, either put it away or I can escort you off base"...

I started to use the escort 9500xi.....have the V1 and just got an adaptive for the bike....the escort I have it hidden in the fairing, with remote sensors....only thing you see is an LED in the dash......which looks like an alarm LED....other than the sound through my com system, no way of knowing its there unless you remove all the cowling....its faily resistant to most sniffers out there...tried it with a VG-2 and a Spectre with one of my LEO buddies, nothing...but again, im not condoning breaking the law..."just for info purposes"

Its always been that serious here, they are strict and will take them. Thas why we are a "commonwealth" we get all the great rules.

I have seen friends people in a parking lot, vehicle not moving an inch and the state boys confiscated them on the spot with a threat of a ticket.

In fact federal law says unequivocally that it is legal to receive any wave in electro magnetic spectrum that is broadcast. Thus Virginia's law is probably illegal with respect to the operation of the device. Never been tested in the courts I don't think.

I am not sure why they are illegal. We were stationed on the East Coast of Virginia for 10 years while hubby was in the Navy and I can tell you that they have more military and government that you can imagine (radar detectors are illegal on bases). I joke that Hampton Roads is like the Meccas of the Navy. Plus D.C. runs right in Northern VA.

Can anyone tell me if they are legal in D.C.? My guess would be no if not legal in VA, but stranger things are possible.

VA, Bases, and DC are illegal in all vehicles. I understand Bases, but DC and VA?

edit. Shoot, Why would anyone go to DC.....no radar detector and no guns

Radar detectors have been illegal in VA and DC for as long as I can remember, and I have lived here since 1986. If you get caught they will take them. I have also been told that some VA State Troopers use radar detector detectors. I know that they take that law very seriously, and will give you a ticket, as well as confiscating your radar detector if they catch you.

Now, if you are bold enough, and I don't blame those of us who live in VA and are bold enough to use a radar detector, there are several good models for MCs that can be stored in your tank bag and turned off if you get pulled over. I believe there is a law that will prevent the PoPo from going through your tank bag unless they have reasonable cause, which could be costly if you are storing a detector in there.

Bottom line is, yes, I would take the chance, but the penalty is a costly one.

Regards,

P.
