Another tragic accident

Wow that is sad. It does look as the article says like a very old Honda.
Driver of Explorer was 16 and turned in front of him but yet it is still under investigation ?
Why were no citations written ?
terrible accident .
God rest his soul. I hope he did not suffer and went quick.
Prayers for his family..

So very sad, but lessons to be learned. Always assume drivers will try to kill you (not intentionally of course). Looks like the kid in the SUV turned left in front of the oncoming bike. Left turns in all situations are some of the most deadly. Whether you're turning left, or a car sharing the roadway is, be extra diligent and alert. They always invlove one of two things: a vehicle crossing your oncoming path, or you crossing the path of an oncoming vehicle. Either way, lots of potential for problems there.

One of the hardest things to judge is the speed of a biker as it either approaches or departs your view. Sideways view is easy to tell, but head on, no. Kid probably thought he had time to whip in front of the bike. In all conditions, what's the harm in waiting a few extra seconds before turning vs loss of a human life? The kid may or may not have had his blinker on, but could have been slowing or stopped to make the left. An alert rider could have noticed this then slowed and changed lanes, or taken the farthest third of the lane if single to give more time and space to react. Not blaming the rider, just trying to suggest things that could be done differently. As we "safety professionals" are fond of saying: all crashes could have been avoided. The study of the how and why can make us survivors all safer street riders.

I find that the best way to stay alive on the bike is to ride as if the following items are true: :rulez:
1) You are invisable. Nobody can see you but they can still hit you.
2) If someone does see you, they are AIMING for you.

If you ride as if those 2 items are true, you will be ready to react to anything a cager does.

Could not be said better.

None the less, still very sad to read. Like B.o.B. said, prayers to his family.
