another chain adjustment question

haow far can you safely move the rear wheel back to tighten the chain? can you move it flushwith the rear of the swingarm? or just to the last hashmark? i'm in the process of getting a new chain, but in the meantime i wanted to tighten the old one. thanks james

A good Q. I have been wondering about mine, although I am a few ticks from the end I have read too many posts about weak chains and the damage that comes when they snap. I am worried with that much stretch it may be getting closer to breaking. Doing wheelies and runnin her hard stretches it fast.
