Adjusting chain tension

I can't find the thread now, but someone posted that they were adjusting the chain (1.2") with the rider on board. Is this correct? I thought the chain tension was measured with the bike on its stand.

Rider on the bike is best

.8-1.2 is recommended.

OK, thanks for the reply.  If I'm sitting on the bike, can I reach down and feel the chain from that position? My bike is on stands while I await surgery at the moment.
If you put the bike in gear and rotate the tire so all the slack is on the bottom of the chain you can check it while seated on the bike. Don't try to do it alone and on a stand.

If you don't have someone to sit on the bike, just set the slack to 1.2 and then with the bike on the ground check to see that you have atleast .8
