6th gear stripped

I know people, myself included have found the "false neutral", this isn't it. I was riding around 80mph on the freeway in 6th and I went to pass a car and I rolled on the throttle and got nothing but a horrific grinding sound.... I have 40,000 miles on the bike, I change the oil every 3k, I am not hard on the bike, most of the miles are done in 6th gear at 80mph just cruising to work. I can't believe that 6th would go just like that, maybe the syncro is out of adjustment, is there a way to adjust that without opening up the case?... or am I going to have to take it to the shop?

Update: I was doing a couple of different searches and found that I am the only one with 6th gear problems, everyone else has this problem in 2nd gear. I find that odd. But I am hoping that it's not the gear, maybe, hopefully it is a bent shift fork.
