2002 BUSA - 12k miles - Rained on Now Knocking...HELP!!

Hello All,

I am new to the Busa world. I have wanted one for years and finally made the purchase of a used 02 with almost 12k miles. I've been poking around this forum and am hoping there is someone out there who can help me. I have been riding my busa for about 2 weeks now and have put a couple hundred miles on it. On the 4th of July I rode to some friends house and it freakin downpoured on my bike and there was no cover in sight. It slowed after a couple of hours and I rode home which was about a 15 mile rife in some decent rain and had no problems. I made it home, garaged my baby and apologized to her. The next day I got up and my wife and I attempted to ride her to the casino here in Kansas City for some buffet breakfast. When I started her up she stalled out after about 10 secs of running. I started her up again and she ran for a minute and I put it in 1st gear to maneuver out of my driveway and it died. I started it up again and let it run for a few minutes and then I began to hear a knocking noise coming from under the plastics maybe from the headers or somewhere close? I dont know what the hell is going on but I'm pretty scared. We ended up riding to the buffet anyway to see if it would just kick out some rain water and go away, and the ride was fine. But when we returned home I could hear it knocking again at an idle. Thats the only time it knocks is at an idle. Does anyone know what this could be? I don't want to take it to a dealer and have him licking his chops to tell me its something so much more expensive when its not. I have removed the side fairings and dusted out a lot of small gravel and sandlike pebbles. I read somewhere on here that there are drains for when it rains that will expell the water but I do not see them anywhere? Any help is appreciated. Also, I was thinking about changing the oil and filter myself while I have everything off. Any suggestions on oil and filter? It appears to be pretty easy to change. Drop the oil plug and drain it. Replace it and put in the new oil?

Re: 2002 Busa rained on now Knocking noise..HELP!!!!

does it get louder as the rpms go up? when u have it idleing in gear does it still make the knocking sound?

Re: 2002 Busa rained on now Knocking noise..HELP!!!!

Does the sound go away when you pull in the clutch.. at idle ?? If so it is quite normal.
The stator bolt can loosen... round left side cover on engine... don't think the rain had anything to do with it. Hope it works out for you.. 12K is barely broken in..

Hold on Ill run outside and check if it does it in gear? I'm pretty sure it does. But it does not get louder as the rpms go up, it actually seems to go away as you rev it up, just when its sitting at an idle you can hear a pretty scary knocking noise. Thanks for helping me.

WOW ok it does go away when I pull the clutch! Thanks. So I can get to and tighten this bolt that comes loose?

Thanks jd I figured that the rain shouldnt have much to do with it. People ride in the rain all the time. Just scared me because it wasnt knocking before and now that it got wet it wants to start acting funny. How and where can I check the oil level? I see the cap to the resovoir and I have the side fairings all off of it right now. I was thinking wbout just changing the oil now anyway while she's naked.

Check your idle too. Should be set at 1150 for factory specs. Most set theirs at 1200-1300 rpm's. That will also help get rid of the clutch chatter at idle. Pull your plugs and check their condition. When I first got mine, I had the stalling issue, pulled the plugs and they had carbon build up. Cleaned them and no more stalling.

Just look at the tach beside the speedo. If the needle is below the 1, it needs to be adjusted up. If it needs to be adjusted we'll go from there.

Sounds like you got some water in the tank. Symptoms you describe sound exactly like moisture in the gas. Put some STP gas treatment in it and see if it doesn't go away.

@J'Man - Yeah I thought thats what it sounded like too. It sounded like water in the tank, but IDK how in the world water would get in the tank. I only use premium octane gas from Quik Trip. I may give it the treatment anyway.

How old is the chain?

It's possible that the rain was just enough to rust shut some of the moving parts and it's slapping as it goes around. I just had my chain replaced on the '08, and she was starting to get that slapping.

When that chain came off, it was evident that some of it had seized.

If you spend as little time on your chain as I spend on mine, it just might be that, too.

Good luck.

my oil cap came off yesterday,I'd changed the oil and had it level and was topping it off,,I barely had it on just in case I had to add a little more,,,anyway,it came off and i turned around to pick it up,,I didnt lose much,,but my ankle and shin was wet,,thats what gave it away, question,,,,,With the cap off,and the clutch is released[depressed]it chatters bad,,,release the clutch,in neutral,,and the chatter stops,,,,,,normal /04 8500 mile gen I,,,clutch feels good,,you cant hear it with the cap on,,but with it off and the clutch is depressed,,it makes a racket like an old through out bearing in a car when you clutch it,,but quite when you release,,,as I said,,you can only hear it when the oil cap is off,,you cant hear anything when the cap is on,,,,,,,,,,

I live in Florida an have been caught an rained on down pours that left me only 3 feet of visibility. It has never affected or hurt my bike. Chain needed lubing :poke:  But that s it could be unrelated :dunno:

I merged the two threads, they are identical and folks will get confused as to which thread they replied to.

Now, since the noise quits when you pull in the clutch, do not start it again until you pull the clutch cover and check the clutch pack bolts( I am sorry, I dont know the technical name), they could have backed out. That would be a good starting point. Put the bike on the side stand when you pull the cover and you shouldnt lose much oil in the process, just make sure you put back what you do spill. Start with that and let us know what you find, then we can help trouble shoot further.

The oil change is as straightforward as it looks, and synthetic oil is worth the money. Mobile One, Royal Purple, ect. Lotta good filters too, the only complaint I've heard about K&N is that the socket end hits some aftermarket headers, but I use em on my gen2 with no problems.
As far as the knock at idle only, that's hard to diagnose without being there to hear it. Post your location, there's probably a member close by that'll help you out.
You'll find everything you need here too.:beerchug:

Ok. I'll do it. Thanks again. Do you happen to know how to or where more specifically the stator bolt is that may be rattling that pace was referring to?

I got the oil changed no problem....adjusted the idle up. It was right at about 1000 now at about 1200. Also used some liquid wrench to spray down the chain and the chatter has settled a little. Oh yeah also out in an stp gas treatment for good measure. Thanks again.
