1999 'Busa fuel (pump) line routing ?

I know, I know, I should have taken a photo of the setup before
I removed the fuel lines running from the tank to the pump.

One is the fuel delivery line (tank to pump) and the other is the
return line (pump to tank). Here's a photo of the pump:

You'll see I've labeled the [inlet and outlet] ports as (1) and (2),
but not sure which is which. I do have the '99 Busa shop manual,
but the two diagrams in it are in conflict with each other (or at
least one of them is a bit ambiguous).

Can anyone tell me if (1) is "delivery" or "return" ??? Thanks!

I'd like to add one more observation ... both nipples on the fuel pump
are 3/8" (O.D.), but on the tank side the "delivery" nipple is 3/8", but
the "return" nipple is 5/16" ... what's up with that? (It's very obvious
when you look at the "fuel tank plugs" found under the pillion seat).

Thanks John ... I appreciate the clarification.

If you look at 9-2, it appears delivery goes to (1).
(yea, I know, it's for a Calif bike, but I doubt they
reconfig the pump :)

And at 4-10, it appears delivery goes to lower (2),
which coincides with 8-23. (I think I found another
drawing or photo which conflicted - can't find it now).

Maybe it's my age or paranoia is setting in ...

Thanks again!!!

Got mine off the bike (2000) with fuel lines on it still. Will go out to the garage and look. Stand by.

#1 in your picture goes to fuel rail. At least it did on mine. I have an inline filter on it so I know that's where it went.

Whoa !!! The fuel-rail ?!?!?!

I know the 2000 model is no differently configured
than the 1999. On mine, (1) and (2) both go to
the tank. Maybe you have some sort of custom,
aftermarket setup? Here's from the shop manual.

The lines marked in red are the two lines (1 and 2)
which route from/to the pump and tank. The line that
routes to the fuel rail will be up around the green line.

Sorry, I meant the fuel in it goes to the fuel rail, it's the out flow from the tank....Now you've got me confused!
Hell I may have had the filter on the return line looking at that pic....
Custom aftermarket setup indeed! More like an afternoon's garage thrashing to get it running! I remember looking at the manual and being confused, but it ran fine, so no worries.

The green one should be still attached wright off the pump to the fuel rail!

One thing I do distinctly remember, put the metal coily thingy back over the lines, or they will get kinked when you put the tank back down.......

Just to clarify now that the water is thoroughly muddied up, #1 in your diagram is the feed line. #2 is the return.

Hmmmm. One diagram in the manual shows this, but
two diagrams show it the other way around.

Did you say you've got your tank propped up? If possible,
could you take a photo from the left side of the bike, so
that is shows the pump and lines going to the tank, and
post it so we can see?

So are you all set, if not let me know, i have a 99 and 2000 here and can go get pics for you!

Well, I just now got the tank on - thru-bolt is in place
and I've got the front propped up ... the vent tubes
are on and I'm ready to hook up the lines to the pump.

Jeremy (Mr Brown) and I talked on the phone for a while.
He has the tank and pump off on his bike - he's pretty
certain #(1) is "feed". It's a crap-shoot at this point :)

Maybe if you can lift the tank up and just look which one
igoes to the petcock, that would be great.

You know what ... this should work, right ?!?!?

If I turn on the key, I should feel suction on one
port of the fuel pump (feed side). :duh:

Well, that didn't seem to work ... I taped the clutch
handle back, hit the start switch, felt both of the
ports ... no suction on either - jeez, I hope the
pump isn't bad :(

UPDATE:
Sure enough, I'm getting a "C41" code ... "Fuel Pump Relay signal".
"Fuel pump relay, connecting lead, power source to fuel pump relay".

Guess I better make sure I've hooked up all the wires.

2 is feed, 1 is return. just changed the lines out in mine, replaced with straight hoses instead of crappy stock molded ones. used high pressure lines that dont kink and made them little longer, works A+ !

2 goes to fuel ****, 1 goes straight to tank
