08 shock on Gen I 04 ltd

I finally got the 08 shock put on. It is better than my 20,000 mile stocker. I bought the 08 shock off a parted out 08 wreck for 25.00. Not much to lose for a possible better ride. My first impression is positive. Rode about 30 miles over a variety of road types , from smooth interstate to bumpy curvy backroads. I used the settings published in Sportrider magazine from the BMW comparo. The 08 seems to have better valving than the 04 but this just may be that it has fewer miles on it. I am doing Racetech 1.00 springs with gold valves later this week. Will report back with my findings. Overall a worthwhile upgrade I believe. I will most likely put a Penske shock on over the winter to complete my suspension upgrade. The 08 shock will be fine tuned over the next couple outings.

The difference was that it was a newer shock with fewer miles. For a street bike...even with occasional track use (road course)...don't waste your $$$ on the Penske...it's a great shock!!! But you will be better off getting your stock shock revalved and resprung...saves you some $$$ for more mods

Yes, this is an Air Jordan jacket. Bought on the closeout last year at Newenough.com.

Rich is correct! You won't be riding hard enough to make he Penski shock a good investment. However, the Penski shock will be an upgrade over stock. What I usually tell guys is, if you can hit the track and ride all day in the intermediate group and never get passed by another paying customer, then maybe you are due for a suspension upgrade. Until then, save your $$$$$.

Upgrading your forks won't improve your ability, it will only improve the bikes ability. IMO you'd probably be better off if you invested the money you'll spend on suspension upgrades on track day instruction.

If you are 200 pounds or less, your stock suspension works just fine for street and the occasional track day. Suspension set up is the key!

I am closer to 240 without gear. Already bought the parts and will be instaling this week. The new 08 shock is definetly better than what I took off.

They changed the front shocks on the Gen II. Mine feels a little bouncy at times running straight down a smooth highway. I would guess among other things it got a stronger spring.

Gen1 front springs are .85kg and the Gen2 uses .93kg springs. For a 240-250lb rider on A Gen1 you should use a 1.0kg spring...if you were using the bike MOSTLY for track days and running in the advanced group...then step to a 1.1kg spring :beerchug:

Maybe you should adjust the compression and rebound on your bike?

It's something I noticed, but nothing that bothers me. You're right I should have the suspension tuned, but then again I would rather buy gas with that money.
