Today's Action with Police Involvement at a school

Today working as a contractor fixing some fire alarm related issues tied to elevator controls . Location 3 Ward Houston Tx. Baylor College Medicine ( a middle school )
I was working , and needed some more materials from my van . Went through the doors exiting to parking lot where dozens of kids are , and two men are fighting .
Officer Martinez ( older female officer ) is responding attempting to get situation under control . No one else parents , or staff is aiding this officer who is really out gunned. I drooped my belt ( tools ) , and moved in . Lucky for me moving in in a very aggressive manner made both separate without having to actually touch one of them .The aggressor ( male 5' 11" 190 ish ) seemed way off screaming , and cussing . The other male ( 6 ' 1" about 220 ) seemed very happy he wasn't taking a pounding anymore.
We escorted both off campus to the street where aggressive male attempted another attack , but I quickly stopped that . Watching him read me up , and down I was ready to take it to the ground quickly if needed . Lucky again for me he backed off . A few minutes pass , and then police cruisers from all directions arrive .
It was discovered the bigger male was homeless , and was caught breaking into the smaller males home down the street . He had chased on foot the other male to the campus . This is a tough neighborhood , and GUNS ring out often here . Mrs Martinez ( officer ) said I was her Angel today . Later after all the dust cleared we had a good chat on what went down . I think its kind of sad though there were a few people insight that were there before me who did nothing with children around .
Had I seen them going to blows in a public area not on campus I would of just kept to my self , but kids are another story .

In this time we have to be careful intervening in a situation we don't know enough about. If one of the people involved is armed, things can change very quickly. If one of the responding cops takes you for an aggressor, things can change very quickly.
Not saying you did the wrong thing by any means, especially when there are kids potentially in danger, but stay safe....

I’m sure 12 people standing around video taping it. Total lack of respect for police these days. The way I read this it was more about supporting the office than worried about 2 kids having a little throw down. Good for you C10 the world needs more people like you.

Also no way a criminal would have a gun on school grounds it’s a gun free zone.

I totally get what Mr Brown is saying here and that's the unfortunate side to stepping up to help anymore. So many don't for fear of becoming a victim because it does happen. More are preoccupied with making sure they're recording the incident so they can be first to share it to the world, as if we all need one more viral documentation of stupidity...

You did good, helping that officer out, and I'm glad it all ended well.

But...whatever happened to letting 2 people fight it out? (they weren't school kids)
After one is clearly done, and a ref would stop it in a sanctioned fight, if the person who is done is still being beaten, then stop it, unless they're a pedophile or rapist...then pummel away.
Otherwise, let them settle it.
I know that if someone tries to stop a fight I'm in, if you get hit in the process, oh well.
And if you cause me to get hit, I'm after you next.
No disrespect intended, but some situations need left alone.
If 2 guys are fighting on school grounds, and no kids are involved, then the kids aren't in danger. Unless someone starts shooting, to which intervention without a gun of your own is unlikely.
As for the officer, it is their job...to exercise their best judgement. A small female should not be trying to break up 2 larger males fighting. It's not her job to get beat up over someone else's dispute.
As said before, if the loser has clearly lost, and is still being attacked, then she should, pepper spray, taze, or shoot the aggressor.
Or just pepper spray them both before trying to jump in the middle.
My opinion, flame on.

On cell phone currently, but will write a reply to some issue's this evening on my laptop.
My concerns to situation.

The "they were men" part is debatable, lol.
I'll stand and take my ass whippin before I run.
I hear ya let them beat the crap out of each other.

But ass kickings are not the same as they were. Or at least how I grew up. Back when I was younger you beat some one down maybe talk a little crap then give them a hand up and share a beer. Now a days a guy goes down and they start kicking them in the face.

First thing is if on a school campus with no school business it is trespassing. ( not my job to enforce )
Students were present ( to many , and not just a few ) So my fear was a shooting , and a child getting hit over what was going on . It does not matter in my book who you are when it comes to protecting children in a bad situation .
Officer Martinez was not in physical condition to stop anything other than a tardy middle school kid .
Guessing she is in her late 50's , and would not pass a physical . School Districts have little funding for police so tasers are out . Pepper spray is a no on campuses , and in reality their gun is useless except defending against a actual Shooter . Their weapon today is the body camera for after something happens .
I had to make some quick thoughts on how , and what to do if X happens . Judging the losing male
had not pulled a weapon , and with plenty of opportunity too he was ruled out. Especially with his retreating non aggressive manners . Male two the attacker had baggy clothes , and was my concern of getting fed up with us stopping the assault . I thought he was my most likely to pull a weapon . I kept my distance close enough to tackle quickly , but far enough that I could counter a attack on myself .
Some Irony of the entire ordeal was leaving today the Attacker ( homeowner )was walking in front of the school smoking . He saw me heading out to my van . So he yelled at me , and waved hello with a thumb in the air . I thought WTF . Not what I would expect . The attacker is more a brawler , and not a fighter as his focus was facial blows . If your really a fighter you want it over quick , and effective without injury to yourself ( if possible ) Watching wild Hay makers being thrown by attacker I knew a fight with him was in my favor by a big margin .

In photo if you zoom in Burglar , and Martinez are standing by the closed walk through gate . He is in all black wearing shorts .

Being fearful of a possible shooting, into a crowd of kids at school, and under all the many other circumstances involved, with only a moment to decide, I can understand the gravity of the situation.
I'm glad things ended ok.:beerchug:

I have said this time and time again, Bryan (@c10) has balls. I can honestly say that given the circumstances not many people would think to step in as he did. The mere fact that it was the children in his mind just shows he has a tremendous heart. He also has that stocky stature and I’m sure the approach threw the parties who were fighting for a loop. Not only that but he tipped the scales and now the victim, officer and Bryan had the upper hand. Things definitely could have escalated as they have been seen to do so. Things like this pose a purpose, I for one know if faced with a similar scenario I would recall this occurrence and Bryan’s bravery and think to try and do something. Thanks for sharing!

I understand the response to having your house broken into .
and i know nothing of the circumstances of the homeless guy
I just find it sad that the homeless guy was down to the level where stealing becomes an option
Nice Job Bryan . Things like that can get very ugly very quickly When kids and an out maned officer are nearby there is great potential for trouble . All it would take would be a lucky blow from the two fighting or a bad shot from an officer (If that became nessassary) for it to end in tragedy

I'll bite -

Simplest answer for intervention - because we can be better than that? We're not "animals"? It's not right to allow someone to get hurt if you could stop it? Not taking a moral stance here or making any personal assumptions about your opinion, just saying in a very sweeping generalization that as a society I think too many stand back and enjoy watching chaos for the sake of entertainment. If this fight were happening in a vacuum without witnesses, it'll play out, but isn't there a societal responsibility to rise above such primal actions, especially with others observing/potentially getting involved or being hurt, and end it if you can?

I don't think there's anything wrong with stopping escalation. You may prevent something really bad from happening.

Just my thoughts, no flaming going on

I respectfully disagree.
c10 had concern for kids getting shot, and I can see and respect that.
Otherwise, if 2 people are willingly fighting each other, it is there choice and right to settle their dispute, why is it a stranger's business to jump in and stop it...and at risk to themselves?
And as I said, once one person is down and done, the other should then stop. If they do not stop, and the beat down person isn't a pos pedophile or rapist(who I'm fine with being beaten to death, or within an inch of), then intervine.
I would not consider myself a "fighter" per say, and depending on the circumstances, I will walk away, vs dealing with the legal drama afterwards. But, in self defense or defense of others...we can throw down, no problem. I will give or take my ass whippin.
For someone to step in is putting their nose where it does not belong, and their nose can be adjusted for it.
We Are animals, and unfortunately, physical violence is all some people understand.
It's as bad as a mouthy lawyer, talks tough, but need's his ass kicked to bring him back to reality.
I was bullied up until about 8th grade...until I started fighting back, then nobody messed with me anymore.
Some people only comprehend things when they are beaten into them.

And I respectfully disagree with this POV...could be an idiot decided to start a fight with someone for no reason, and he's standing there while a bunch of other idiots just watch and do nothing.....how civilized are we if that becomes a norm? Oh wait.....let me get my cell phone out...

We can agree to disagree though; some step in while others walk away. Sometimes it may be right to do either, but I say go with gut instincts at the time and strive to be a better person, no matter what the circumstances. I also say why question one's decision to do what they think was a good deed in a tense situation?

'Civilized' isn't a 4 letter word.

It's different if one person does not want to fight, or is being bullied.
I will, or will attempt to stomp a bully's ass, no questions asked.
