    The gauges are self-calibrating which is why they make a full sweep when the ignition is turned on. The pointers will return to the starting point. So as long as the pointers are reseated pointing to zero then there should be no problem. If the gauges don't function properly you can reset them...

    Have you checked the tip sensor? Does the starter motor turn, but the engine isn't firing? Any clicking when you push the start button? You got a shop manual and gone through the trouble shooting?

    Guessing that by now you've figured out the source of the shrapnel? My guess is a spun bearing. With the head removed the cylinders should move with minimal but equal amounts of resistance. Any abnormal wear pattern in any of the cylinders? Post up some pics, we love pics!!
