I've left mine completely stock and done just fine in the So Cal canyons. I mostly run errands, commute or once in a while weekend canyon runs so it doesn't make much sense to mess with it. I may swap out the suspension for Ohlins someday, but that's about it. :)

Quit leaning all your weight on your hands, sit up and don't slouch. You should only have light contact with the handlebars. No matter what bike you get, if you are doing this, it will cause the problems you mentioned.
