Thinking of riding from N Florida to Colorado.

It's a little over 1800 miles to Ft. Collins from here.
No set time frame to get there so no iron butt style riding for me.
Longest i've ever ridden in a day is 500 miles or so. My sister lives in Ft. Collins and brother in law as well as an old riding buddy live in Denver. I'll stay a week or more so I have plenty of time to recoup..

Might stop off in Tn. to visit a friend on the way up to break up the ride some.

The only drawback is i'll be riding by myself. I have my own performance repair business but things are super slow here right now and figured it's the best time to do it. I'm not getting any younger and this is something i've been wanting to do for a very long time.

Still not 100% i'm going to do this. 1800 miles is a long ways and I do not want to get there and end up having to fly home and ship the bike back..

So am I crazy? Has anyone made a long ride like this and enjoyed it? If so what are some tips or tricks?

I have the stock seat on the bike now but will probably get a Corbin or send my spare front seat out and have it redid for comfort. Had a new image and didn't like the seating position, worse then stock for me with the hump in the back. Lee did say he could do one without the hump, But since he reshapes the stock foam I don't think it would be as comfy as a Corbin, Sargent, ect

Talk to Rich, BaBusa. He flew in from Ca to NC. Bought an '08 Busa. Rode around during the '08 Spring Bash and rode home to Sacramento on the '08. It would certainly be an adventure. I think Steve and Doug are guilty as well.

I did 4300 miles this spring and 5600 miles last spring on trips to California. Thinking of riding to Colorado next month which will be about 3100 miles. Read some of the tips/mods in this section and you'll have a blast.

Do it  I would suggest a magnetic tank bag with some clothes in it. this will allow you to lean on it and give your back a rest. Every time you change up your riding position you extend how far you can ride. I have the bag, and heli-bars, big help. DFW to Reno in 2 days, farther than you plan to go. I was on a tight schedule, loved the ride. The most I have ridden is 1244miles in 21hrs +. Interstates are boring, but you make better time, I like to stay off the slab. 4 lane divided roads are best, good speed (10mph over) and towns to change riding position every 30 or so miles. Good luck and enjoy :cheerleader:

Red1100cc rode from Wyo to the keys and has a whole travel log of it. That's a good haul but if you space it out you should be able to do it no problems.

If you end up coming also look at the weather when you are planning on being out here and bring appropriate gear. It starts to cool down in Sept. Well sometimes.

If you make it up this way send a PM I know some great riding roads.

Sure go for it. I've been all over the country many times in my life by bike. Stay off the highways. Grab those pink roads on the road map, You can make great time doing that and still have an enjoyable ride. Or take pink roads and around three pm jump on slab and burn 200 highway miles before you stop for the night. Good gear is important to keep the weather off. Don't over think it you can always find a room in the eve when you care to stop. A way to air and plug a flat tire is really all you need beyond the basic tool kit on the bike. I would not likely make larger repairs then that on the road myself. You can buy a sweat shirt or clothes on the road if you need to so don't over pack. I spare pair of gloves incase yours get wet. Boot covers work well to keep the water off boots if not waterproof and don't take much space at all. A strapped gym bag to the rear seat if you don't have saddles will do the trick. Add something firm to the bag <tent pole, broom stick cut to bag size> so you can strap the bag down no matter how full or empty it is I perfer straps over bungie cords or nets. You can mail stuff home along the way if you want to lighten the load. Worse case senario bike breaks < not likely> and you rent a van and buy some straps and drive it home. Not really going to cost to much to do that. You can be home in a van in two days from anywhere you are talking about going. so it would only be a two day rental

Thanks alot guys for the info. If I do this it will be around the first of Sept. I don't have a tank bag but plan on getting one and also found a set of Cortech bags locally on Craigslist i'm thinking of buying so that will give me a little more room.

Ouch, what timing! lol half the FoCo .org members will be in Utah on a ride from the 2nd til the 9th of September. Would be happy to meet up and go for a ride if we get some overlap, but sounds like unlucky timing

Here's Red aKa Russ' travel log. Wyoming to the Keys with a stop in Wpb for Cuban food  and back. He rides all over the place. He's a nut I wannabe!

:rofl::thumbsup::beerchug: That trip was AWESOME!!:cheerleader:

:poke: Ya know if you do it right, you could camp in an ORG members yard every night. at least down south. up here we get a little sparse.

if not back yards then cheep motels. just roll the bike into the room.

:cheerleader: go for it. i did it with a stock seat and rode a few looooong days. i really enjoyed the days i made around 350-500mi. didn't push real hard, just zipped along lookin for bacon cheese burgers and bbq.

Radar detector. Nothing deflates your enthusiasm than a bummer ticket. A camera and a story is always fun to read after the fact. Enjoy!!

I have friends on the way so if it takes me 4 days I think i'll only have to stay in a motel 1night which is fine with me.

I have a Escort Solo cordless Radar detector I use in my auto's I have been saying i'm gonna mount it on the bike, but have yet to do it. I'll have to research what others are using. I use a stem mount for my GPS otherwise that's where it would go.

No departure dates are set yet but roughly I am figuring 4 days there stay 1-1.5 weeks and then 4 days back.

Do it!! I'm in Brighton co, just a short ways away and tri city cycle right in Loveland would be a great place to get the bike looked over! What is this foco.org???
