San Francisco, colored terrane?

So on my trip this summer to Cali, we flew into San Fran airport where out
my plane window I see this....

What is the colored terrane...water, mud...what is going on there?
Why the variations in color?

I saw it on the history channel
They go through a few colors, reds, greens and blues.
