Oil Change

Time to change oil and filter. Bought four quarts of Royal Purple. Got home and noticed that it's 20w-50w. Bike says it wants 10w-40w. Guy I bought the bike from used RP. I did not see any 10-40 RP. Can I use the 20-50 royal purple safely? 2001 Hayabusa.

You can, but I would not do it unless you live in a really hot climate. I change the oil from 40 weight to 50 weight when it starts getting hot in my v twins. Never ran 50 weight in my busa.

i wonder if it calls for 10/40 based on the tolerances of the parts inside. like the bearings and oil holes inside. just wondering

20w50 is really a lot heavier than necessary unless it's in an air cooled V-Twin,Brock only recommends it in big nitrous or turbo motors.I've been running 5w30 or 10w30 only(again, per his recommendation)since new(2011)with no issues.

To thick IMO unless you are riding in a really hot climate and sustained high speeds 10/40 is recommeded for this and most other water cooled bikes

i've been running Motul 15W50 for the last 80,000 miles without any issues...however, i also do quite a bit of riding in really hot climates and 600-800 mile days...it's worked out well for me but may not for someone else depending on riding habits

Suzuki Recommends 10W-40 , but on page 2-4 of OEM owners manual a alternative engine oil scale is given . 20w-50 is accepted from temps of -10 F to 104+ F . You will be fine . In like motors of the Hayabusa ( ZRX1200 FJR 1300 OEM is 20/50 ) I have 10/50 for this summer in the hayabusa , but run 10/40 in the cooler weather . 60 degrees and cooler .

Looks like we're done here. Thanks for the input. Special thanks to c10, who inadvertently reminded me of the owners manual that took my local dealer two weeks to get. They told me it might be the last one left in the free world so I put it in a "safe" place. Only took two hours to find it.

I don't know if the Gen II are any different from the Gen I as far as oil is concerned - BUT in my manual (Gen I) under 20w-50
it states -10C to 40C OR 14F to 104F. Not a big deal at all as most people will not ride at -10C or 14F. I know I won't. Add a Windchill and my fingers wouldn't work.

But I agree that 20w-50 would be OK especially in a warmer climate.
