you just need the program and the proper wires to do it. Here is the problem, you really need a dino if you are tuning. If you are just elimintaing crap and doing the normal small items then you would be ok with a laptop and the proper cords. As for the 500 bucks seems a bit high even for a customer map.
If they are installing a boost by smith ecu editor and a dyno tune, it might be ok. The BBS is like $200, say $50 install and dyno tune with ecu tuning, I would say it is ok. If they are bench flashing your ecu for tune, no.
I think it is somewhat fair. But keep in mind that they usually have previous maps to work off so that saves them time and money. Writing to the ECU takes a little longer than a PC or Bazzaz and cannot be done real time so keep that in mind.
