Brian Banks exonerated on rape conviction to work out with NFL teams - NFL News | FOX Sports on MSN

One week after being exonerated on a rape conviction that sent him to prison for five years, former California high school star Brian Banks is gearing up for workouts with as many as four NFL teams.

GOIN' CAMPING

Banks, 26, told ESPN columnist Rick Reilly he is scheduled to work out for the Seattle Seahawks June 7, and has received similar interest from the Redskins, Chiefs and Dolphins.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, who was at USC from 2001-09, recruited Banks out of Long Beach Polytechnic High School. The star linebacker had been offered a scholarship to play for the Trojans before a classmate accused him of rape in the summer of 2002.

Banks' dreams of an NFL career were seemingly derailed when he took the advice of his former attorney and pleaded no contest to rape and kidnapping charges, rather than face the prospect of 41 years to life in prison if convicted at trial.

Banks recalled that the lawyer told him, "You can go into that courtroom in front of a jury. You're a big black teenager, they're going to automatically assume you as guilty."

After 62 months in prison, he was placed on probation, subject to electronic monitoring, and had to register as a sex offender.

Banks, however, was vindicated last week after presenting prosecutors with a video of his former accuser admitting he never raped her.

In a shocking twist, Wanetta Gibson contacted Banks last year on Facebook, telling him she felt guilty about making up the rape allegations.

She asked if they could "let bygones be bygones" in an apparent bid to rekindle their relationship.

Banks is now seeking to recover $100 from the state for each day he was wrongfully imprisoned, and says he has been training rigorously since last fall for a chance to impress an NFL team.

"I'll make 'em happy," Banks told ESPN. "After all I've been through these last 10 years, I can still do some things that will impress you."

The 6ft 2in, 245-pounder boasts he can dead-lift 545 pounds and run a 4.6-second 40-yard dash. Gavin Macmillan, who trains NFL players and volunteered to work with Banks for free, believes there is a chance Banks can make an NFL squad, saying "you can see why USC wanted him."

hes only asking for $100 a day for the time he was in jail...Thats nothing. I wonder if that is the max you can get or something. He needs to file for a civil suit against that chick.

You guys need to realize this girl was just a sophomore in high school. It was her mother that sued the school system. She should also be held accountable if not more so than the girl.

15 years old is plenty old enough to know right from wrong. she deserves everything she gets period. why blame the mother for trusting her daughter?

One problem this guy is going to have is that he pleaded guilty, so his complaint is against the lawyer, not the system. Still a screwed up situation and I admire the guy for not getting a gun and settling scores himself. Heck for what people get for murder these days he might get by with time served.

Since he already served the jail sentenced he should be able to rape her for real this time.. This girl just about deserves it.. She ruined someones life and made out with 1.5 million in the process.

Nobody deserves to raped, your comment is disgusting and stupid.

Actually he didnt plead guilty i think he pled no contest.

Chef, consider how many taxpayers the mother raped. I had some questions about the people related to the topic until I watched the video, and then it all made sense.

i have no positive input into this ... system is too slighted to the "assumptions" of guilt... actually no i have one input... a friend at work said something to me this week that i had never truly thought of... or heard before.. here it is... we in this country are not "free". we can only be "free" if we can afford the legal system! meaning that if you are not part of the 1% of folks that can just throw money at the courts ...hire expensive lawyers.. ect ect. we are not "fee" we are slaves to the INJUSTICE of the american legal system. i know this first hand as my wife had two of her children forcibly adopted out to their grandparents , not because we abused them or didn't take care of them .. but ONLY because they would be better off with them because they make half a mill a year. my wife has not seen them since 05 nor is allowed to as she has no legal rights to them... all because we didn't have enough money to get good representation..

What is really SAD is that they won't ever make the accuser take a polygraph :banghead::banghead: Especially if a minor.
But a minor can lie as good as anyone else. They ALWAYS think the accused is lying to get out of trouble.

In this country you are Guilty until you are proved innocent. (when accused) :banghead:
