Sometimes when you meet another person your accomplishments and contributions to this world all the sudden become miniscule. I had the honor of meeting this man this morning and sitting with him a spell. Since I studied WWII and other military history in school I immediately recognized his hat. As I opened the door for him he said thanks and I said it was the least I could do for the 3ID. He looked up and smiled, said to me 'oh you like that stuff?' I was already as I usually am speechless before men like this when he said 'I got something in the trunk to show you.'
He came back with the pouch that contained the below. The wallet was in his back pocket when he was injured. Being from NY he always carried a nickel in his wallet for the subway.
When the rifle grenade mentioned went off the nickel in his wallet stopped that piece of shrapnel you see next to it. Unfortunately other pieces injured his stomach, thigh and calf and he was done. A survivor of Anzio, the entire Italian campaign and into Germany until they being the enemy were done. Awesome. Read the acct of the day he earned his Silver Star. I was reading it like I was in history class but completely taken aback by the fact the one described was before me. This is one of the best reasons to live in South Florida as I get to meet heroes like this on a daily occasion. Not too many left sadly but I will surely share this story with my kids and let thin know I met a real super hero today.
