Finally at the summit - very spine of the Sierra, standing atop the Pacific Crest Trail.

Then terrain changes rapidly as you decend from near 10,000 ft all the way down to 3000.

A quick shout out for our other host lodging - West Walker Motel - great lil biker-friendly place. We rolled up and the owner walked out, welcomed everybody and asked if anyone would like a cold beer. Cooler was waiting for us. Then walk across the street to dinner.

On over to the Big Hill Fire Lookout along Ice House Rd

Dsc05600_bighill.jpg

Little easier to read?

Dsc05600_sign.jpg

View from the fire lookout isn't too bad. This is Union Valley Reservoir (all man-made stuff up here), and the penstock you can barely see at very center flows on over to Loon Lake. Launch point of the Rubicon Trail for the jeepers headed to Lake Tahoe.

But the real highlight of bringing the guys up here is this.

Dsc05597_bighill.jpg

We got a real treat when the pilot walked out and gave us a full tour of the aircraft.

Dsc05587_helo.jpg

Specifically modified as a heavy lift helicopter and to get Fast-Rope firefighters on the ground. Helo takes the guys to the fire- the jump out of the helicopter hovering above fire. Slide down the rope hanging out the side and go to work!

Dsc05590_helo.jpg

Expensive piece of machinery. To give expensive some scale- Each blade costs $1,000,000 -each- to replace. Yes, 6 zeros.

Reservoir to the right is Ice House Reservoir - and that peaky peak on the right is Pyramid Peak. Just on the other side is Lake Tahoe.

So you made it all this way and the pics didn't put you to sleep - where's the on-board ride pics is what you're really wondering?

You need to see this page if this sort of thing interests you:

Lots of Pics: Clicky--> GoPro HD Mounting Ideas on your Motorcycle | PashnitMoto.com

Brand new page have put together chronicling the last 6 months of experimenting with mounting the GoPro Hero on the bike.

And here's the arm... This is purchase right of the RAM Mount site - off the shelf item, and the 1" RAM balls are also straight from the ExpressMounts.com site if you ever want to start fiddling with this sort of on-board photography and video.

Pashnit- again great pictures! How does that camera work? Is it a video camera that you are freeze framing for still pictures? Or do you have it setup to click a button while riding and the camera reacts and snaps a picture?

Josh - click here and read through the specs:
Buy Now: GoPro HD Hero Wide HI-Def Wearable Sports Video Camera | PashnitMoto.com

The GoPro Hero has quickly gained an immense following with riders and motorsports folks. It's all self-contained and will shoot video or normal photography. The GoPro Hero HD is all new cam system shooting 1080P. One I have is the normal GoPro Hero 5.

I'm using the 2-second-photo feature to get those photos. Basically, you turn it on when you hit a particularly juicy set of curves or twist about the track and let it run. Has settings for 2 or 5 second pic intervals. With brisk-pace sport-riding, the 2 second interval works well.

I'm shooting photography with it, but here's sample of the video you can shoot with it:

Great Pasnit! Thanks for the info! You know, Ive really got to stop reading your threads. You keep adding stuff to my "must buy" list and I am going to go broke!

Tim...as usual...fantastic pictures, great narration; it doesn't get any better than that.

:beerchug:

Well done, and congrats on another successful year!
