big...it shouldn't be too daunting for the novice home mech to perform this task...per the shop manual page 2-8 in the "Periodic Maint." section outlines the procedure quite nicely...with the most scarey part being "Cam Removal" (should you need to swap out some shims) which isn't really all that scary at all and is covered in section 3-28...15 minutes of reading and your average DIY type will feel nearly confident and competent...and after post an in depth pictorial tutoring on the subject?...it should be "Just Follow Thew Step-By-Step Instruction/Pictures" childs play.

and outside of a good ratchet set?...the only non-typical special tools we may need will be a torque wrench and a magnet.

Pretty reasonable to as Suzi OEM shims are about $8 ea. Sudco imports and sells them for $5-$5.50 ea.

One of the site sponsors has the OEM shims listed for $4.21 each and I have seen them as low as $3.71 each. In the service manual and online I couldn't find any shims listed smaller than 2.30 so that would rule out needing almost half of the shims on your list.

and then the guy who's got his busa 1/2 torn apart discovers he needs a 2.25 shim...or a 2.75 shim...and then what?...he's sorta screwed...and we've succesfully defeated the whole purpose of the shim bank...right?...now he cusses me and the freak'in shim bank idea...nope...that's not the sorta thing i'm looking to accomplish here..however..I do agree that we should stock up heavily on the more popular mid-range shim sizes but should also have a few of the oddballs on hand for "just in case"..granted...we may not ever encounter a single valve throughout all hayabusa.org that actually needs a 1.35mm or a 3.3mm shim (and if they do?..they probably have more serious problems than just a valve adjustment issue) but..we should have at least 1 of each of even the low/high spectrum oddballs...especially at the prices you mentioned...it wouldn't hurt...JMHO and L8R, Bill.

Great idea Jinks. Mines up on 40k and doing it right off. Extras will goyour way if this flies & I'll check at my local dealer, he's a pretty good guy and a busa rider since '99. He may come up with something to add.

I'm just trying to save someone from buying shims that would never be needed, like the 19 sizes (1.35-2.25) that you listed that are smaller than the 25 sizes (2.30-3.50) that are listed in the service manual. Take those 19 shims if you bought 2 of every size, that's over $150.
You could replace every shim for 2 motors for that amount.

You can count on me for contributing to this. As mentioned before, maybe we can organize this so we can cover any possibly needed sizes, if we get enough involvement.

didn't read all the gobbly gook.... but the first to things to try are:
1 - measure all the tolerances and record the shim # in a log. then see which of those shims can be relocated to another valve. This can decrease the number of needed shims greatly.

2 - Find a smaller shop in your area (dealers may help depending on your relationship with them) .... and do an "exchange" with them for the right shim you need.


I have found this to be a successful plan of attack for many bikes in the past.

and those ... generic kits may not be as far off as you might think.

I talked with the service manager when I did the valve adjustment on my Rex a few years ago - and he let me swap out the shims I needed. Hopefully I will be able to do the same this time (my Busa just passed the 15k mark).

If I can't do a swap with the dealer I would be interested in the shim bank.......

I agree, we should stick with OEM or a known quality shim. The exchange coming back should be the same. I think if we covered the same sizes as the Service manual quotes it should be sufficient. The 9.5mm fits a bunch of applications so it does not surprise me that Sudco offers 40 sizes.

I’m betting if someone needs a 1.35 mm shim in a busa, something is not right. Valve/seat cut wrong, aftermarket cam with a screwed up base circle, something, but they have much bigger problems to worry about than the shim bank not having a 1.35 shim.

What is the 035-006 kit available for? Maybe we could get a board sponsor to “sponsor” this by selling the kit and/or OEM shims to us at cost. I know my Sudco account is long gone.

I’ll buy in on the deal, but I think getting shims outside of 2.3-3.5 range is wasted money that could be spent having a deeper coverage.

I have seen the Sudco 035-006 kit for around $240 and it includes 40 shims, 2 each of (2.35-3.30), about $6 per shim. I have seen the factory shim kit 12800-41810 for around $370 which comes with 105 shims, 5 each of (2.50-3.50), about $3.5 per shim.
