    Default Pikes Peak Highway

Has anyone ridden Pikes Peak Highway in Colorado? What's it like? How much is the toll?

make sure you engine brake when going down, my brakes were 240 gegrees according to park ranger who measured brake temp in the middle of the mountain.

If I remember correctly, it was around 10 bucks per person. Vic is spot on, on the way down, use lower gears as they measure break temps, if over a certain amount they make you wait till they cool down. Let me see if I can find a few pics for you.

Looks like $10 will not cover a family vehicle.

The road is a toll road (2003 rates: $10 per adult, $5 per child or $35 per car).

They finally paved the whole road all the way to the top. It's a decent ride, but you will be going very slow the higher you go. Tight turns, cars, and gravel. Way better than taking the train though.

Just got down from Pike's Peak. Only snapped a couple of pics. It's $12/person. A couple of snowflakes came down when I was at the top.

Real men don't need guardrails! Did that in my truck after towing a camper from Virginia. Family was laughing at me because I was nervous about the trip down on the way up. Turned out, coming down was less stressful than I thought. Would be a lot more fun on the BUSA though. I can't believe the guys that race up that mountain during the Pikes Peak hill climb. They got BALLS!

I went up there a few years ago and its a great drive. I was there in the middle of July and it was snowing. I also got to see a lightening storm from above the clouds. It was really worth it!
