I'm guessing but if the photo is of a Gen I, it's probably the lift handle that's used when lifting the bike onto a centerstand.

Decoration so u cant see inside when the fairing is on. I guess it could also be for aero dynamic purposes. So that when ur riding the ao r doesnt go in side that area as much.

It's just for looks. It finishes off the hole when the fairing is on. The right side has a flat black piece to match, sort of.

If you remove it, your aerodynamics will be completely thrown off

If you add 2 stickers and a set of underglow lights, it will allow you enable the warp speed again.

I would also bet that its there so you wont jam your fingers into the frame or have water / debris going behind it into the trunk area.
