Adding reverse

Might just be a shot in the dark but...
I am a left leg above the knee amputee and I'm only 5'5". I have a prosthetic and my bike is lowered about as far as it can go without bottoming out everywhere. Going forward isn't a problem for me. However when I get to my destination if there isn't a lot of room to just ride straight out of my parking spot I have to back my bike up. When I still had two real legs this wasn't a problem. Now it's a huge problem. Has anyone ever thought about if reverse can be added or how it would even be possible? Maybe just some kind of back-up assist? If anyone has any thoughts on this please let me know.

Thanks,
Charlie

Neutral with a sort of starter motor on the chain/sprocket? Wouldn't be easy, or cheap, but I would think it could be done.

Hmm, interesting question Charlie. Isn't there a relatively new website that soley focuses on handicapped mods to motorcycles that riders have done?

On the Goldwing, they use the starter motor to back the bike up, so starter motor to a small front sprocket that'll lower down onto the chain?

We sell a lot of Pingel Electric Push Button shifter kits for our handicapped buyers if the shifting is an issue. There are also sites about outrigger kits that owners have 'invented' for those that can't keep the bike upright at slow speeds or coming to a stop. Might google stuff like that & see what comes up.

I know some big touring bikes like Goldwings and what not have reverse but to try and add it into a transmission case as an after thought probably isn't gonna happen but...... if you had a wide tire swing arm with a jack shaft you might be able to fabricate another gear with a one way spragg clutch onto that shaft with a small chain and low speed electric motor activated by a switch on the handle bars??? External is the only way this is gonna happen because there just isn't enough room inside the existing tranny to add another gear that also requires an idler gear plus another shift fork and new shift drum and shift star mechanism. Too much to do unless somebody took everything out of the tranny case and had the facilities to start again from scratch. Even the wide tire swing arm jack shaft mod that I mentioned would need some serious fabrication and machining to the jack shaft and swing arm to add the necessary spragg and gear and then mount a small low speed, high torque motor a few inches away on the right side of the arm. Contact a swing arm company and tell them what you want and need and maybe they could do it but if it takes off and they start mass producing them and find a market for it(like you and I'm sure many others) I want royalties.:laugh:Good luck man! I"m glad your riding and I'm sure you or someone can make it happen. PS In case some people aren't sure,??? in real simple terms, a spragg is kind of like a roller bearing that locks in one direction but free wheels in the other direction. Attaching the reverse gear sprocket to the other side of the jack shaft through a spragg will allow it to lock and engage with the electric motor in reverse but free wheel when riding forward so it doesn't spin the electric motor.

Pretty much what I was thinking bike dude, but on stock mounted virtually to the chain guard holes with a right angle drive change. Mounted close to the sprocket would reduce flex while using also.

it could be done but would stick out the side of the bike on a custom mounting plate..

See, mount this where I said with a spragg clutch. It has 400 inch/lbs torque and is 10 inches long. I kinda wanna try it now lol. I'm sure harder than it sounds.

I wonder if you got an arm with a Nos bracket built into it if you could stick it there and make a custom cover paint it blue with some stickers and everyone wouldn't know what it was.

Would it be feasible to design like a 3rd wheel to come down on the impaired side? It could be a simple design for you to manually drop. You can push with the one good leg still correct? Just need the balance taking care of.

Something long the lines as this guy uses. Doesn't need to be near as complicated as you are much better off then him. Just to give you a reference idea. I simple lever to put it in place would work.

Lol like that nos subwoofer, really though I think it can be done. And would be pretty cool.

Yea sorry off subject but I bet you could fit that small motor in something like that but not sure if he wants it to be extended or not. Stock wheelbase you don't have much room to work with.

I'll find it again, but it didnt show price. I'll find it, but if you wanna look it up too and find others I just typed in "high torque right angle motor" in google.
