Why not? If you have ever removed the factory base for the cap. You will realize that some of the Allen bolts are dummy bolts.

Yeah, I dont remember if they were 3 or 4 bolts that actually hold it down, you can see it when you open the gas cap.

i think it is 4 bolts holds it. I just saw an Ebay listing for a Gen2 gas tank with a gen 1 paint scheme on it... hmmm
