Miles on a new engine?

I was just curious to know if their is any way to know how many miles are on an engine?

I've seen some engines for sale on eBay, that say 14,000 miles. But how do I know that's the truth and it's not something like 34,000?

without an odometer, I am unaware of a verifiable way to tell mileage. maybe an accident report/salvage title of the bike will have the mileage somewhere. otherwise, just the seller's word.

just like he said, really no way to tell. either take the sellers word or just buy brand new

Go to a recycler and see the motor still in the bike. And even that's not a guarantee, but about as good as you can do.

If you can pull the oil pan to see how much grit is laying in there,also run a compression test on all the cylinders, this can yield the most info about whats been happening inside, low numbers or more than 10% difference between cylinders will tell ya things aren't as they should be for a 'new' motor. my shop manual isn't here or I'd give you the numbers for the compression test
