any law enforcement guys on here, had a question about parking tickets

went to the gym tonight for a while, parked the bike in the crosslines btwn two handicapped spaces. I know, dumb move on my behalf. I have a bad tendency of doing this, but normally not btwn handicapped spaces. My wife was walking out of the gym just as i was leaving and overheard an old man complaining about me being parked there, and mentioned the cops wrote down my plate. My question, if they mail me a ticket could they get me for parking in a handicapped space? Technically i wasn't blocking any spaces what so ever. If they do ticket me, i'm praying it's just a normal parking ticket and not a $250 or $500 handicapped ticket. I would think if they were going to give me a ticket though, they would have left something on the bike. Now i'm all worried about it and have to wait a few days to see if i get a ticket in the mail

^^ hope he is wrong for your sake^^

I park in a normal parking spot everytime, I really don't see why I would need to get special parking just because my bike is smaller ???
However, I do make sure I am parked in plain sight of any cameras just incase someone hits my bike, but I do the same in any vehicle, even though it would probably not do any good even if I have their plate but hey thats what insurance is for

you will just have to wait for the mail. If you do receive a summons, bet it probably will be the expensive kind. Not much sympathy for that one.

If the lines are white it's not part of the handicap spot .
If the cross lines are blue it is and yes you parked in a handicap spot .

crap, i sure hope not. Only reason i do this sometimes is bc the way people drive around here and try to get close spots all the time, i could easily see some moron come flying into a spot, not see my bike, and run right into the back of it

I would park there but with they way handicap drivers are and their average age it's a good bet somebody is gonna knock it over .

A member here answered this, he parked in a regular spot in a lot, person pulled into the space quickly hit the bike knocked it over, backed up and left. If cagers can't see them with the lights on an a rider on it in a big ars road, they are not going to notice one occupying a big old parking space. Prepare your self for a knock down when you park in a parking space in parking lot Most surveillance camera won't help you identify squat.

well, the lines were indeed blue so i'm probably screwed if he decides to send a ticket. I sure hope not, but time will tell. Anybody know how much handicap tickets are, i want to say $250 or $500? Definitely won't be doing that anymore, hopefully i get lucky and don't hear anything about it, but not with my luck lol

The cop probly just wrote down the plate for the old mans sake. Seems like if it were that big a deal to them, they would have left the ticket or waited for you.
Probly shouldnt have parked there, but why are there handicapped spaces at the gym? If you can go to a gym, you can handle the parking lot:poke:

Same with the expectant mother spots at walmart, you can walk 47 acres worth of walmart, you can handle the lot too. Just sayin

First off, where was this? What state? Which county? That will probably determine it. It has been a while as I am currently assigned to the drug unit and have been for a long time but I believe in our county you can only write the high dollar handicapped violation in person. I would have to check on that but seems I recall that actually has to be hand delivered at the time of the violation. Not to say you won't get one but florida statute states

316.1959 Handicapped parking enforcement.
—The provisions of handicapped parking shall be enforced by state, county, and municipal authorities in their respective jurisdictions whether on public or private property in the same manner as is used to enforce other parking laws and ordinances by said agencies.

316.1955 Enforcement of parking requirements for persons who have disabilities.
—(1)It is unlawful for any person to stop, stand, or park a vehicle within, or to obstruct, any such specially designated and marked parking space provided in accordance with s. 553.5041, unless the vehicle displays a disabled parking permit issued under s. 316.1958 or s. 320.0848 or a license plate issued under s. 320.084, s. 320.0842, s. 320.0843, or s. 320.0845, and the vehicle is transporting the person to whom the displayed permit is issued. The violation may not be dismissed for failure of the marking on the parking space to comply with s. 553.5041 if the space is in general compliance and is clearly distinguishable as a designated accessible parking space for people who have disabilities. Only a warning may be issued for unlawfully parking in a space designated for persons with disabilities if there is no above-grade sign as provided in s. 553.5041.

(a)Whenever a law enforcement officer, a parking enforcement specialist, or the owner or lessee of the space finds a vehicle in violation of this subsection, that officer, owner, or lessor shall have the vehicle in violation removed to any lawful parking space or facility or require the operator or other person in charge of the vehicle immediately to remove the unauthorized vehicle from the parking space. Whenever any vehicle is removed under this section to a storage lot, garage, or other safe parking space, the cost of the removal and parking constitutes a lien against the vehicle.

(b)The officer or specialist shall charge the operator or other person in charge of the vehicle in violation with a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as provided in s. 316.008(4) or s. 318.18(6). The owner of a leased vehicle is not responsible for a violation of this section if the vehicle is registered in the name of the lessee.

(c)All convictions for violations of this section must be reported to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles by the clerk of the court.

(d)A law enforcement officer or a parking enforcement specialist has the right to demand to be shown the person’s disabled parking permit and driver’s license or state identification card when investigating the possibility of a violation of this section. If such a request is refused, the person in charge of the vehicle may be charged with resisting an officer without violence, as provided in s. 843.02.

(2)It is unlawful for any person to obstruct the path of travel to an accessible parking space, curb cut, or access aisle by standing or parking a vehicle within any such designated area. The violator is subject to the same penalties as are imposed for illegally parking in a space that is designated as an accessible parking space for persons who have disabilities.

(3)Any person who is chauffeuring a person who has a disability is allowed, without need for a disabled parking permit or a special license plate, to stand temporarily in any such parking space, for the purpose of loading or unloading the person who has a disability. A penalty may not be imposed upon the driver for such temporary standing.

(4)(a)A vehicle that is transporting a person who has a disability and that has been granted a permit under s. 320.0848(1)(a) may be parked for a maximum of 30 minutes in any parking space reserved for persons who have disabilities.

(b)Notwithstanding paragraph (a), a theme park or an entertainment complex as defined in s. 509.013(9) which provides parking in designated areas for persons who have disabilities may allow any vehicle that is transporting a person who has a disability to remain parked in a space reserved for persons who have disabilities throughout the period the theme park is open to the public for that day.

that is why you park at the very rear part of a parking space....you park all the way at the front dont you?? good way to get your bike hit

The cop probly just wrote down the plate for the old mans sake. Seems like if it were that big a deal to them, they would have left the ticket or waited for you.

walmart in my town has motorcycle parking its in the front of every other parking lane...i guess they did this to prevent people from parking in the handicapped area

Sweet!! I want that, im always goin up the shopping cart ramp to tuck the bike near the wall.

i wouldnt worrie if the officer was going to have done anything he probably would of had it towed...no ticket in the mail for handi cap parking the ticket would have been on the bike waiting for your return

Sorry but the handicap space are what they are titled for!

Sorry to sound like a azz here, but, your not handicapped, are you?

I always park up front close to the store. The walmart in my town has even specifically told me that I could. Granted they have a space so big that they could fit another vehicle in there, but instead it is yellow lined. I get a huge kick out of people complaining about me parking there, whether they are handicapped or not.

Now if it is in a situation like yours, I would probably not park in an area that size. Since I do understand that handicapped vans might need that space to get in and out of.

If the lines are white it's not part of the handicap spot .
If the cross lines are blue it is and yes you parked in a handicap spot .

I think he needs to check with his local law enforcement agency about "color" of lines. In my area, the color of lines means nothing. In fact, I've not seen "blue" lines in many places around here...either white or yellow...whatever color they use for the rest of the parking lot. If the space(s) are marked for handicap access, then the entire space, cross-hatched area included, is reserved for handicap access.

Off topic, but relating to "color"... One of the first times I went out to VA, there was a car with blue lights off to the side of the road. Michelle told me to get over to avoid a ticket. I asked why and she said "because it's a Sheriff and they will ticket you". Had she not said that, I would have ignored it. I've never seen all blue lights for emergency vehicles. In my area, it's Red/Blue or all Red. Had she not said that - he could have been behind me and I would have ignored him until he "got my attention". "Parking lot security" / "Rent a cop-wanna-be" are the only ones who use all blue in my area...and they have no authority...

I personally don't ride my bike to walmart cause someone will steal it. I'm real paranoid cause I've already had one bike stolen. If I can't see my bike from the inside of the store I don't go.
