Detecter Questions

I know this is probably like :deadhorse: but I am curious. I was thinking about getting a detecter to add to winter mod list, but got to thinkn. How when mounted on a bike does a radar detecter get a clear "unobstructed" view of the rear? Wouldnt the rear facing antenna not be fully functional because of the driver? Also if mounted on the handle bars, wouldnt the front sides of the windscreen support lessen the viewing area of the forward facing antenna? I know these are dumb questions, but am just tryn to figure the mounting situation out....

Feel free to call Mike Valentine and ask him. Mine works flawlessly mounted on a stem stand just a few inches in front of my tankbag. Rear detection is perfect as does the side and front detection. Really, its paid for itself many times over. I don't ride without it. BTW, for the earliest detection possible I use earbuds with V1's (too expensive) m/c unit that sits atop the detector. Despite the cost my V1 paid for itself with the first couple of true (saves). Ask around, tickets these days are expensive and I avoid them like the plague.

mine was a ghetto mount but it works great.. I removed the suction cups and stuck on some two sided tape and stuck it down on the windscreen down by the guages.

velcro on top of the speedo head.. works like a charm..

Google "radar detector reviews" plenty of third party opins on detectors

as far as saving you money.. that is impossible to say will happen.. Radar detectors really work best if you are following someone when the gun goes off to clock someone..

I am sure most LEO's will confirm this, by the time your little buzz box goes off, it is already too late.. Also, if they shoot you in the back and you touch the brakes? they are coming after you.. (I have heard more than once that they now know you have a bird dog and are now going to cut you no slack)

I have never had a speeding ticket (knock knock) travel occasionally with my 9500i and I suppose if I say "it saved me" every time it has gone off? i have saved maybe $25000 in fines, tickets and insurance rate increases over the years  I usually run it just to remind myself to watch my speed..

Really the best offense is a good defense.. On heavily traveled roads, running fast all alone is a ticket.. running fast in traffic is probably also a good bet for a ticket..

right time and place can be pretty safe IMO..

Depends if they are using instant on radar, most police in my area just leave the thing on blaring all day allowing me to know waaaay before I see them. Now the Highway patrol are much more sneakier, I just dont speed when there is any oncoming traffic, or you have a rabbit to follow like Bogus said!:beerchug:

was my understanding that most departments have standing orders to keep the things off.. could just be my area..

The "Rabbit" works very well... BUT a caveat... I have been in the middle of these little packs and the LEO picks off the last guy in line, nothing is fail safe :()

v1 is great, also check out the escort passport 8500. i have had mine for years, and it has saved me a dozen times, and it is really cool to be doing a top speed run in the car and have it shoot up cause behind that suburban was hiding a crown vic lol. didnt even get brake lights from him.

check out radar roy. just google search it. he is an ex cop now trying to outsmart the system. many many valid tests. id reccommend it in a heartbeat

Definitely NOT true. My 8500 x50 has given me nearly 2 miles or warning before. And if it's set to instant on, all you need is one car ahead of you that he clocks and you know he's there. Now, your statement WOULD be true if you were talking about say a cheap cobra detector. Those things don't work worth a crap. They'll go off as your passin the cop. (sister in law had one in her car, so I know from my brother's experience). As long as you get a good one, Escort and Valintine are probably the 2 top dogs, in my oppinion, you'll be fine. As for mounting, I took the suction cups off and bolted the mount to the windscreen. It's got a quick disconnect, so it's still easy to take off. First pic was takin before I upgraded to the bolts. With the cups, it bounces WAY too much. Sometimes, going over bumps in the road would cause the detector to bounce so hard it would smack the windscreen. They don't have to be big bumps to creat A LOT of movement in the detector. Bolting it solved the problem.

I just pull everyone :banghead:

True story, i heard mine about 3 before and gave me a good 5 minutes of blaring at me. The remote setup is great that you have, and i used the attachment to put it up by my headliner, out of the direct path, but it still works better than anything ive seen.

A JAMMER is what you need. Mount it in one of the scoops since they're illegal.

Good tip. I'm thinking of going with the 'Blinder X' on both the bike and the car. The V1 has paid for itself more times than I can count.

super trooper huh? tell me what you would have done..

4 bikes running oh say 110 and cruising along.. *you are right in the middle btw..

one bike pulls ahead of you another decides to "sprint ahead" at oh say 160+?

you light em up and it takes 4 miles to get his attention.. meanwhile, the rest sort of fall back and scatter  (not that this could ever happen in real life).. you just issue a warning? very cool :)

Thanks for all the input guys, but what about in the case of a painted windscreen, hmmmmmmm guess your wearing it on your helmet. Do they make some suction cups rated @ 200mph?

does anyone here use a jammer in connection with the detector it supposed buys you a few seconds before he can lock on you to reduce the speed??? my question is does it work???

Well the best is to get info from friends working in the force to find out what type of radar are they using and their functions.
