I've always wondered about those. Do they get in the way? How much protection to the bike is offered? Like what will get scraped up when/if your bike is laid down or dropped.

Actually these are very common with stunt riders because the full crash cages can be too bulky. I've had them on 2 of my bikes and I loved both sets although I never had to test them out luckily. They say they offer 10 times more protection than frame sliders.
