08 FI light + gear issues related?

MY FI light came on today and the bike still runs good but the indicator is not working and i can start the bike with kickstand down in first gear but not in second..... Also when i rev it up with the clutch in in neutral it revs fine but if the clutch is out it backfires a bit at high rpm. What the hell is the problem .... I have been searching how to check codes but i guess i have to pull the tail off.... also a while back i washed my bike and the indicator was reading the wrong gear instead of saying second it would say 3 ect ect.... any adivce i would appreciate it....

by the way sorry its only has 14k miles and a yosh full exhaust

You dont need to pull the tailpiece off. Under driver seat is this plug .
Use this and a piece of wire or paper clip to jump it and get the code then we can help you.
1st pic shows plug with cap on and wire in it.
2nd pic shows cap off. This way it is easier to get wire/paper clip inside it but not neccessary to do.
3rd pic shows error code on gauge cluster.

Do this and let us know.

I got code c31 Gear position signal circuit malfunction,

Gear position signal voltage should be higher than the following for more than 3 seconds. (Gear position sensor voltage > 0.60 V) Without the above value, c31 is indicated.
Gear position sensor, wiring/coupler connection.Gearshift cam etc.
