:banghead: Can someone/anyone tell me the signs of a bad starter clutch ON A '02' BUSA? And on a scale from 1-10 how hard is it to correct?

very easy to correct, unbolt - replace - bolt back together. Pull the igntion cover off and you can inspect everything. It's better to replace parts before it goes. If it goes it can ruin your engine case.

Talk to goldenchild, he's got replacement parts for the starter assembly.

I'm sitting at my desk doing tech stuff for the day, give me a shout we can discuss problem and solve it all in one call... Thanks Commuta

Mine broke and hurt the cases. I was able to weld them back up though while it was in my sand rail. I would definitely replace it before it fails.

And add the case saver ring to prevent case damage. It saved mine from getting whipped out. :beerchug:

Hi from the uk... Argh...... :unhappy:Sounds very much like i've got the same problem here - Went to start the bike on Saturday, when i hit the button - nothing but nasty grinding noises. It sounded like a bag of bolts in the bottom & scared the jeebies out me so i left it well alone.

I'm no techie with the spanners but can usually find my way around (slowly). Is this a job i can do myself? Would i need any specialist tools? Where's the best place to buy any parts?

Sounds like GoldenChild above may have the answers - does he supply parts? Are they upgraded bits etc? If so - Can they be shipped to the UK? What exactly am i looking for if i strip it down myself? Presumably lumps of metal missing of a gear somewhere?

Oh - so many questions, but i'm trying to save booking it into the dealer and being charged well over £40 GBP per hour!

yes, you can inspect and replace the parts yourself with basic tools. Since you're in the UK you may want to talk to Sean at BigCC. As long as there isn't any damage to your case. What yaer is your bike?

Cheers - the bike's a 2003 - i've heard that earlier models had an inherant problem, but apparently after 2002 this was "resolved" - is that right?

Hi - i'm back again, I still havnt plucked up the courage to strip the bike down to inspect - but have just got off the phone to big cc racing who didnt inspire me with confidence - they obviously know what they're talking about, but suggested it's unusual that the starter clutch would let go on a 2003 bike, and suggested it could be much more serious...

They were suggesting all sorts of disaster including split cases etc, but as a very basis standard spanner monkey, surely i'd be seeing oil everywhere it shouldnt be in the very least?

Can anyone out there give a very nervous owner the heads up on what exactly i'm looking for to determine what the problem really is - if it's the starter mech deaded - what would i expect to find once the cases are off?

Is there sucha thing as a step by step how to for this - seeing as it seems to be quite common?

you don't have to rip the engine out or split the case to inspect things. Just remove the ignition cover. You can follow the steps in the manual on how to remove/instal starter and parts. It's not nearly as difficult as you think. :beerchug:

All done - and damage located... every tooth is missing from the end of the starter motor, and corresponding damage to the end of most of the starter idle gear teeth. (dammit) - just had to order a new motor for £399gbp and a new gear for £35gbp direct from suzuki as they're almost impossible to source elsewhere over here....

Oh - i love it when it goes wrong...... at least i know where i stand - it's always expensive!!! On a plus side - after all the fuss - only took me aout 30 mins to strip it all out...

Thanks for all the advise....
