Track day... whew
Posted 05-02-2009 at 08:56 PM by Mr Bogus
Well nothing like getting up at 6AM and heading out the door of the hotel.. Seems like old days of boat racing..
Hit the track at 6:30 with the gates opening at 7.. Like 4th in line.. by the time the gates open, there are about 30 tow rigs waiting to get in..
Sign waiver, find a nice paved pit spot and unload..
7:30 Registration opens, hey it is right across the lane from pit spot.. cool..
8:00 Tech opens.. Hey right in front of pit spot.. cool again. Sail right through and not single issue.. "Hey buddy, you going to try and run that busa today?, this ought to be fun to watch.."
8:30 beginner orientation meeting with a walk through the hotpits and track entrance.. (butterflys are starting to get to me, feels like final round at the races for some reason)
We finish just in time to take a leak and mount up.. I am feeling pretty nervous about now.. am surrounded by 600cc rat bikes and a couple pretty nice "others"
I am one of the last bikes out and get my own personal control rider.. couple taps on the head from him and away we go.. first turn is at the top of the long straight away and is a beautiful triple digit sweeper.. we go in at about 70.. cold tires are pretty obvious as the back end is wobbling around and it feels like a flat tire (28.5 psi)
The track is 10 turns (only 2 lefts) and there are some nice elevation changes. After hearing the Advanced and intermediate groups run, I am paying attention to lines and gear changes.. Turns out the Busa is happy in third gear all the way around the track with the exception of the long straight.. I can wind it out in 4th if I want.
I let up about 300' early so that the "faster" cornering bikes can get around me.. was 1 to 3 bikes per lap.. by the end of the day, no one is passing me.. I am holding my own in the corners and leaving dust in the straights..
Common theme of the control riders is that I got to get off the bike further.. crap my old fat azz is trying but this is a lot of work.. I made 6 sessions and sat out the last 2.. fatigue was setting in and I could feel towards the end of session 6 were I am losing my concentration.. taking a hint from my snow sking.. it is time to call it a day..
There were a couple run-offs and a high side in our group.. A beautiful Triumph triple was the highside.. Probably 100 mph get off at the entrance to turn 1.. ouch..
Got back to hotel and took a nap.. woke up pretty sore from the workout..
Tomorrow I will probably just run the morning sessions and maybe one after lunch..
Overall I had a great time and it was only by about the 4th session that I even started to get very comfortable .. was also about the time guys quit passing me
