Default Please help a rookie!!!

Hey bro, I'm lookin to do somethin', don't quite know what yet
sittin stock, except for stubby pipes, air box mod, power commander and bout to throw on some 16/42s next week.
I'm in the Army, so far from rich,
want to buy a fairly low mile engine (mine has about 30k on it).
and then i want to dump about 1,500 to 2,500 into it.
wondering if you could point me in the right direction as to where i should even start... Thanks alot

P.S. I will gladly take ALL opinions and advise from the penut gallery LOL.

Aha.. okay. How long have you had it?

If it were my bike and I had just got it I would not be working on the engine so much. First off- Id get it in the shop for the once over. Just to make sure i dont have something that is going to explode on me while im travelling down the road at 70+mph. Since you ride 400 miles a week (similar to me), peace of mind is important. Don't want to end a ride because of something that could have been prevented in the beginning.

I'd venture to say that you engine is probably fine. If you are mechanically inclined do a service on the engine. Or have someone else do it, like Suzuki dealer.

Then I'd start replacing stuff like brakes (& components), tires, chain, etc. etc.. things that get wear and tear. I would have to assume the last owner didn't take really neat care of these items (as many riders don't). Then and only then would I work towards performance stuff. Plus, the more time you spend on that bike in the coming months will help you decide what is really important to you....

Again though- how long have you had it?

I've had it about 4? months. and am already in the process of switching out all the pads and the rear caliper(cheaper then the rebuild my mechanic recommended.)
Already been through some tires and sitting on new shinko raven 009s. the chain will be replaced next week along with a 16/42 conversion.
now i think i'm ready to start looking at performance?

also, here is the link to the sprockets and chain i am looking, is this an alright deal and ?120 link? i thought we sat on 112

as far as proformance mods you have basicaly everything besides nirtirous or a air shifter(not realy proformance but helps) besides that its either engine work or turbo kits(which require engine work anyways) So probably go with a 1397 so pistions and a little bore with a new fuel system and thoughening up the engine and some cams with do about right

toughening up the engine is basicaly replacing head bolts and bears and anything that might break under more torque and horse power. So basicaly make it able to take 400hp and actualy have 240 hp or so will make it much more solid and less likely to go BOOM under hard riding.

as far as 1397 kits usualy around 1k or so but should get to much unless you do alot more to it in which it might not end up a 1397.

But check out APE They got a good 1397 piston kit that they can ship quick if you go with je pistions

If it is a Gen 1 bump the compression up one point, change the cams for something with more timing and some head work. If you have more money, a stroker kit plus the other mods including larger valves and a dyno tune. This will give you a 200+ HP engine with out making it unreliable and very streetable. You could go turbo but it will be expensive because it is best to start out with a turbo kit you could add more power to later on. I am not a big nitrous fan for street use.

$1500.00 will get you a nice pipe and add about 12 - 15 RWHP. $2500.00 will get you cams and pistons and get you up to around 200 RWHP. Check with our sponsors. Greg at HPC, smithbusa, johnnycheese, just to mention a few.

Good luck with it, and a well taken care of Busa will exceed 100K miles my brother. Second hand motors are about 3K.

mike, im out of fort hood right now... and currently sitting in baghdad.. getting ready to redeploy in a few weeks. i was with 82nd during OIF1, hence the All-American patch for my symbol.

That ebay thing doesnt look too bad. Call Bart at TOBEFAST (Street Bike Parts`Sportbike Helmets`Yamaha R1`R6 Parts`GSXR Parts`Honda CBR Parts`Street Bike Gear`Clothing`Jackets`Gloves) and ask them about the Vortex stuff.. they carry a full line.. and will probably cut you a better deal plus a small military discount.
